Trash Piles Up On Santa Fe National Forest

SANTA FE  Trash is an all-too-common sight on the Santa Fe National Forest. It’s everywhere – at developed recreation sites, at dispersed camping sites, in Wilderness, on trails and even in streams. 
 
It seems clear that the “Pack It In, Pack It Out” mantra isn’t getting the job done. The Santa Fe National Forest is asking visitors to take one more step and “Pack It Home” to throw away with the household trash.

Heinrich, Udall Introduce Buffalo Tract Protection Act

U.S. SENATE News:
 
WASHINGTON, D.C.  U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Tom Udall (D-N.M.) have introduced the Buffalo Tract Protection Act in response to deep concerns from local communities in southern Sandoval County about the negative impacts of a proposed gravel mine in the area.
 
The bill will withdraw four parcels of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands, including the Buffalo Tract and the Crest of Montezuma, from any mineral development, including gravel mining.

The Los Alamos Duplicate Bridge Club (LADBC) is hosting the 2016 Los Alamos Sectional Bridge Tournament, July 29-31, at the Betty Ehart Senior Center (BESC).
 
Play starts at 2 p.m. Friday, July 29. In 2015, more than 100 bridge players attended the Sectional. A similar turnout is expected this year.
 
The LADBC holds regular duplicate bridge and occasional team games four times a week, Monday at the White Rock Senior Center, and Tuesday through Thursday at BESC.

Join the Los Alamos County Recreation Division for the 42nd annual Los Alamos Triathlon July 30.

The race starts with a 20K bike ride that includes challenging climbs and great scenery, then into the pool (feet first) for a 400-meter swim and ends with a 5K run from the Aquatic Center to the First Baptist Church on Diamond Drive and back.

The following road closures will be in effect for this race:

  • Canyon Road will be closed 5 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. to through traffic

Valles Caldera Celebrates 16 Years–Free Entry Saturday

JEMEZ SPRINGS — Valles Caldera National Preserve will celebrate its 16th birthday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, July 23. 
 
Visitors will get an insider’s look at the scientific discoveries being made at the preserve and can take part in traditional “Earth-skills” demonstrations. Entrance to the preserve is free on Saturday for the family-friendly event.

Vance Has Perfect Prediction In Weekly Pace Race

Linda Vance had a perfect prediction and was the fastest female finisher on the 1 mile course recording a time of 10:00 in the weekly pace race held at East Park. 
 
Other accurate predictors were: Lynn Bjorklund with a 2 second error, Lyle Cunningham at 4 seconds off, Paul Pacque with a 14 second differential, and Nikol Strother and Sanna Sevanto tying at 17 seconds off. Nikol was also the top finisher in the 5K race with a time 22:23.

Ryan Smeltzer is the top predictor at 7 seconds off as well as the best finisher in the 5K distance with a time of 24:41 in last Tuesday’s weekly Atomic City Road Runners Pace Race in Walnut Canyon.
