For young people looking for an active, outdoor job for the summer, Bandelier National Monument is recruiting for two crews – the Bandelier Conservation Corps (BCC) and the Bandelier Preservation Corps (BPC).  Opportunities are available for men or women, ages 16-25. 
 
The BCC will be engaged in thinning and fuel reduction projects, trail work, and assisting the park maintenance crew with projects and special events. The BPC will be assisting with preservation programs, doing graffiti mitigation

Los Alamos County has hired PGA Professional Sam Logan as the new manager of the Los Alamos Golf Course. He came on board Monday and following two days of orientation is now on the job at the golf course.

Cheryl Pongratz, right, wins the Derby hat contest at Saturday’s annual Kiwanis Kentucky Derby fundraiser at Cottonwood on the Greens. Pongratz named her hat Run Away From The Roses. Sharon Stover comes in second with her hat, which she named Sheila after her sister who loved sunflowers. The event grossed $4,585. The proceeds benefit Project Eliminate, a partnership between Kiwanis and UNICEF to combat maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) across the globe. Medin Has Perfect Prediction In Weekly Pace Race

Adrian Medin, 5, had a perfect prediction in the Pipeline Road “Gut-buster” race held in the Quemazon area.
 
His finish in the of 15:30 in the one mile race was exact to his prediction. Other accurate predictors were his father Zachary Medin at 6 seconds off, Allison Chan with a 22 second differential, and Katie Gattiker at 48 seconds.

Chamisa Hosts Fourth Annual Glow Run Saturday

Chamisa Elementary will be hosting their fourth annual Glow Run at 7 p.m., Saturday May 14.
Some changes have been made this year, including a lowering of the entry fee, water bottles for the first 100 entrants in lieu of t-shirts, and we will start the 5k runners before the 1 mile racers. The race will begin and end at Chamisa Elementary in White Rock, 301 Meadow Dr. The 5k will begin promptly at 7 p.m. Racers will follow the Meadow/Rover/Meadow Loop around White Rock.

Valles Caldera National Preserve Plans Prescribed Burn For Valle Grande

The Valles Caldera National Preserve is planning to implement a prescribed burn project on the preserve that will begin as soon as Wednesday, May 11 and be completed within two to three days. 
 
The prescribed burn will target up to 1,471 acres of grass in the Valle Grande, adjacent to N.M. 4 between mile markers 39-42. Traffic delays may occur during the ignition phases of the burn, but we do not anticipate any road closures. If conditions permit, burn operations will occur during mid-day in order minimize impacts to morning and afternoon commuter

North Mesa Dog Park Closed Through Friday

The North Mesa Dog Park will be closed for installation of a new irrigation system and new fencing to extend the park and also to include a small dog area. 

The park will be closed through Friday, May 13.

The County anticipates reopening the park over for the weekend and asks the community to respect the park’s closure for safety reasons.
