Guided Hike To Cave Of The Winds May 14

Trail expert Craig Martin will lead a hike to the local Cave of the Winds Saturday, May 14. The two-mile hike includes 500 feet of elevation gain and a bit of a scramble to reach the cave entrance. This hike, organized by the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is one of many events to help people get outside and enjoy nature.

Los Alamos is surrounded by an extensive trail network that can be both inviting and intimidating.

Trail expert Craig Martin and wildlife veterinarian Dr. Kathleen Ramsay are holding a workshop at  the Los Alamos Nature Center to teach people how to best prepare for hiking local trails 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 11. Registration Opens For UNM-LA Summer Classes For Adults And Kids

Los Alamos Community Education has released its summer schedule of classes for adults and children. The print schedules, which were mailed to area households, also are available on campus, in stands around Los Alamos and White Rock, and online at losalamos.unm.edu/community-education.

Book Signing By Craig Martin And Terry Foxx Tuesday

Craig Martin and Terry Foxx will be at the Los Alamos Nature Center at 2600 Canyon Road in Los Alamos 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10 to sign copies of their new book Plants of the Jemez Mountains Volume 1.

The book, the first in a three-volume series, will be available for purchase in the nature center gift shop.

Plants of the Jemez Mountains Volume 1 contains clear and informative drawings, color photos, and descriptions of the trees, shrubs, vines, ferns, and horsetails found in the Jemez Mountains. The book also includes helpful guides for the novice naturalist.

The 2016 Los Alamos Dog Jog took place Saturday April 30 with a wonderful sunny break between the Friday and Sunday wintry weather – the weather goddess must love the shelter dogs!
 
More than 200 humans and about 150 pooches enjoyed the lovely day and had fun walking or running and getting toys and treats and prizes. In all, the event raised more than $13,000 for Friends of the Shelter to continue their work

Bjorklund Is Top Predictor In Weekly Pace Race

Mark Bjorklund was the top predictor in the weekly pace race held in the Western Area with a 18 second differential. Other accurate predictors were: Burton Krohn at 27 seconds off, and Allison Chan and Georgia Pedicini tying at 34 seconds.
 
On the 1 mile course Billy Strother was the first finisher at 9:47 and his sister Savanna Strother was the top female recording a 10:09. Ryan Smeltzer had 25:54 for top finisher in the 3 mile race and Roxana Candia was the first female with a time of 27:56.
