Explore Cerro Pedernal In The Chama Valley With PEEC

Hikers can take a step back in time and explore one of the earliest mineral deposits worked by prehistoric man in North America.
Join geologist Patrick Rowe Saturday, June 20 to explore Cerro Pedernal, a prominent landmark in the Chama Valley, rich in both beauty and history. The Cerro Pedernal is narrow mesa, capped by volcanic rock and containing the outcrops of the bedded Pedernal Chert Member of the Abiquiu Tuff several hundred feet below its flat summit. Artifacts made of Pedernal Chert have been found hundreds of miles from its source.

It’s not often people can safely get up close and personal with the likes of black bears, antelope and mountain lions, but thanks to James Brooks of Yukon Wildlife Studio, families can do just that.
For this week’s Summer Family Evening Event, Brooks will bring animals back to life with his many taxidermy specimens, allowing visitors to experience these species in a way rarely possible in the wild. This demonstration is 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 17 at the Los Alamos Nature Center on 2600 Canyon Road.

With all the rain in the community lately, beautiful wildflowers abound.
Join PEEC’s Jemez Mountain Herbarium curator Chick Keller at 5:30 p.m. Monday, June 15 for a Wildflower Walk to discover their names and locations. This is an easy walk to identify some of the wildflowers that can be found in and around Los Alamos.
The group will meet at the Los Alamos Nature Center at 2600 Canyon Road and carpool to the trail that Keller will select based on what is blooming at the time. The walk is free and no advance registration required.
