Los Alamos Reservoir Filling Slowly [Video Attached]

Los Alamos Reservoir is beginning to fill with water again. 

Contractors have rebuilt the dam and have cleared out the debris and muck that resulted from the devastating 2011 Los Conchas Fire. 

The run off from winter snows has been disappointing this year and the reservoir is filling very slowly. Currently there are about three acre feet of water in the reservoir that has a capacity of approximately 25 acre feet. It is hoped that a good monsoon season may fill the reservoir. Read More

For kids who’d like to explore Bandelier National Monument with a ranger and learn about nature and the Pueblo people who used to live in the park area, this year’s Day Camp will be 8:30 to noon, June 19-22.

SANTA FE – Forest recreation specialists are currently busy preparing 54 campgrounds, trail heads and picnic areas for the summer season across the Santa Fe National Forest.

Hazard tree inspections, drinking water sampling, and general maintenance to facilities brought on by winter snow are being accomplished so that visitors can once again enjoy their national forests.

Forest & VCNP Enter Stage I Fire Restrictions Tuesday

SANTA FE – Despite recent scattered rain showers, the Santa Fe National Forest and Valles Caldera National Preserve will enter Stage 1 fire restrictions at 8 a.m. Tuesday due to extreme/exceptional drought conditions and high fire danger.

 

The Pecos Wilderness and San Pedro Parks Wilderness areas are exempt from Stage I fire restrictions. Devices solely fueled by liquid petroleum or LPG fuel that can be turned on and off are allowed in areas that are barren or cleared of all overhead and surrounding flammable materials within three feet of the device.

Help Needed for Run the Caldera

Valles Caldera Trust will hold its eighth annual Run the Caldera event June 8 and 9.

The event consists of a marathon, a half-marathon and a 10K run. Everyone is invited to cheer on hundreds of runners and spend a day or two at the Valles Caldera Preserve.

Valles Caldera Trust is looking for volunteers to help with both the 10K and half-marathon on June 8 and the full marathon on June 9. Many volunteers are needed for such tasks as parking, staffing the aid station, serving food and more.

Jemez Mountain Trail Runs Take Off May 25

Hundreds of athletes from across the Southwest will compete May 25 in the Jemez Mountain Trail Runs.

Runners have already filled the available spaces for the popular half-marathon for which there is now a waiting list. Spaces are still available for the 50-mile and 50K runs.

The competitive half-marathon, 50-mile and 50K runs take place along single track trails and dirt roads in the Jemez Mountains, including Pajarito Mountain and the Valles Caldera National Preserve. The JMTR 50-mile race is regarded as one of the toughest three fifty milers in the United States.

Registration is now open for The Family YMCA’s annual July 4 Firecracker Fun Run.

Race begins at 8 a.m. Thursday July 4 at The Family YMCA, 1450 Iris St. in Los Alamos.

Cost is $25, $10 for youth ages 13 and under, and $15 for Y members. Runners/Walkers will receive a t-shirt at check-in 7:15-7:45 a.m. July 4 and are eligible for one of the many door prizes.
