Free Activities for Families Saturday at YMCA

In support of families keeping children physically active, The Family YMCA will offer free activities 10 a.m.- noon Saturday, April 27 for Healthy Kids Day.

Y’s across the nation are participating in “Get a JUMP on Summer.” Outdoor fun will include a variety of jumpy-hop-tastic activities, as well as unique crafts and healthy snacks.

‘Atomic Man Duathlon’ Gears Up for Competition April 28

Named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of America’s top 10 “best small towns to visit” (April 2013), Los Alamos is host to the Atomic Man Duathlon – one of the best and most highly anticipated sporting events in New Mexico.

Now in its ninth year, the Atomic Man Duathlon is scheduled for April 28.

The Duathlon’s intermediate “fat man” course consists of a 10K run (twice around a 5K loop), followed by a 40K bike race; and concluding with a 5K run around one loop. The shorter “little boy” course is comprised of a 4K run; 15K bike race; and finishing with another 4K run.

The group must have looked like a sight for sore eyes to any drivers who happened to glance over while speeding down the highway between Cuba and San Isidro, New Mexico.

The National Park Service has closed the Alcove House Site at Bandelier National monument due to concerns over the structural stability of the archeological site and exhibit.

 

Historic masonry repairs dating to the 1930s have developed a network of cracks. In recent days, masonry at this location has become dislodged, raising concern for visitor safety.

 

The National Park Service is actively engaged in planning repairs for the site.

Forest Announces Release of New Motor Vehicle Use Map

SANTA FE – Effective Monday, April 15, the Santa Fe National Forest will release the Motor Vehicle Use Map that shows the public where it is legal to drive motorized vehicles on the forest.

The map is a result of work that began over six years ago in response to National Guidelines known as the 2005 Travel Management Rule, requiring all national forests in the country to evaluate their motorized system of roads and trails.

SANTA FE – The Southwest Jemez Mountains Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Project (SWJMCFLRP) will present a monitoring project update Friday, April 12 at Santa Fe Community College.
