Aspen Elementary Holds First ‘Field Day’ Event

Aspen Elementary School Physical Education Teacher Adam Garcia organized the first school-wide outdoor “Field Day,” in which all 400 Aspen students spent Thursday afternoon participating in races, hulahoop contests, water balloon relay and other field events at the school.

Thirteen years ago, July 25, 2000, President Bill Clinton signed the Valles Caldera Preservation Act, which created the Valles Caldera National Preserve.

To celebrate that occasion and the many accomplishments of past and present staff, volunteers and contributors, we will host the second annual Valles Caldera Preservation Act Celebration from July 25-28. Hundreds of athletes from across the Southwest will make a run for Los Alamos to compete in the 8 annual Jemez Mountain Trail Runs May 25.

Runners have already filled the available spaces for the popular half-marathon for which there is now a wait list.

Public Meeting to Focus on Community Trail Plan

Los Alamos County has enlisted the assistance of Trail Solutions, a program of the International Mountain Bike Association, to assess the County Trail Network and develop a revision of the community trail network plan.

The plan will be the focus of a public meeting held from 5:30-7 p.m., May 8 at Fuller Lodge. The open house format will provide an opportunity to view and comment on specific projects called out by the plan, and to provide comments on the general concepts presented in the plan.

Bandelier: Alcove House Open … Kiva Remains Closed

The Alcove House site at Bandelier National Monument reopened Friday May 3 after Monument staff closed it April 10 due to concerns over the structural stability of the archaeological site.
 
The reconstructed kiva in Alcove House remains closed until further notice. Visitors must follow closure guidelines for their safety.
 
The public should expect another closure in late fall when crews will repair the cracks in the walls of the structure.

Reglien Best Predictor in Pace Race

Twenty two runners and walkers participated in Tuesday night’s pace race on West Road, starting and ending at the Los Alamos County Ice Rink. 

 
The goal was to predict their times for completing a one mile or three mile course. Unfortunately, timer problems precluded recording the finish times for the last eight runners. 
 
The best predictor was Jennifer Reglien with an adjusted error of 51 seconds. On the one mile course, the fastest male was Richard Thompson III (8:30) and the fastest female was Patricia Burnside (8:56.)

Leanne Smith took first place in the 3.1-mile race at the 17th annual Friends of the Shelter Dog Jog Saturday, April 27 in White Rock.

The event is open to all participants with or without a dog and at any pace in both the 3.1 mile competitive run and 2 mile non-competitive fun walk/run.

The annual Dog Jog is coordinated by the Los Alamos Dog Obedience Club, Mountain Canine Corps, and the Atomic City Roadrunners as a fund raising benefit for the Friends of the Shelter.

Coyotes are a species unique to the North American continent and range from New England to Alaska and as far south as the Panama Canal.
