SANTA FE — New Mexico achieved one of the largest year-over-year FAFSA completion increases in the country this year, joining just three other states to hit a 20% gain as national completion rates reached an all-time high.  

The National College Attainment Network (NCAN) reported that 54.7% of high school seniors nationwide completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as of May 1, nearly two months ahead of the June 30 benchmark. State Road 112 At El Vado Dam Closed May 27–Sept. 4, 2026

NMDOT News:

The closure prevents all public access across the dam, requiring travelers to use alternative routes, 24 hours a day throughout the closure period.

NO through traffic will be permitted; emergency vehicles must find alternate routes!

The closure allows for investigatory drilling and equipment staging on the roadway as part of long-term dam rehabilitation efforts and ongoing safety investigations into the dam’s foundation, following repairs that began in 2022.

Rural Students In Rio Arriba County Get Access To Broadband Internet

More than 170 rural students in the Española Public Schools now have access to high-speed internet following the completion of a state-funded broadband project in Rio Arriba County. 

The Office of Broadband Access and Expansion (OBAE) awarded Ethos Broadband, an internet service provider headquartered in Albuquerque, a $1.3 million Student Connect grant to build broadband infrastructure to connect 173 rural students in the school district.

NM Supreme Court Invalidates Man’s Convictions For Killing When He Was A Teenager

COURT News: 

SANTA FE — The state Supreme Court today vacated the second-degree murder and evidence tampering convictions of a Valencia County man, Brandon Villalobos, for a killing that occurred when he was a teenager.

The Court unanimously concluded that Villalobos was denied his constitutional right to a speedy trial. He spent nearly six years in custody awaiting trial after his arrest in 2014 for the beating death of a 12-year-old friend, who was identified in the opinion by his initials, A.M.
