Back by popular demand for his third visit to Mesa Public Library, Chuck Hannaford, Project Director for the Museum of New Mexico’s Office of Archaeological Studies, returns with this popular and award winning hands-on archaeology outreach program so fitting for this year’s summer reading theme of “Dig In to Reading!”

Hannaford will set up his array of archaeological artifacts from early New Mexico history, all touchable, for visitors to explore in the Mesa Public Library lobby.

Two Die in Early Morning Collision with Flatbed

POLICE NEWS:

A man and woman died early this morning after their vehicle collided with a flatbed on N.M. 68.

Authorities identified the victims as Marissa Martinez, 19, and her boyfriend Eric Romero, 21, both from Alcalde.

Martinez was driving and according to Española Public Safety Director Eric Garcia, her vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed along N.M. 68 about 8:15 a.m. when the flatbed carrying a backhoe entered the roadway on the north side of Española.

TODAY: Udall to Speak on the Floor About Keeping Student Loans Affordable

WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Sen. Tom Udall of New Mexico will deliver remarks on the Senate floor about the need to find a comprehensive solution to keep loans affordable for college students in New Mexico and across the country.
 
The Senate is voting today on the Keep Student Loans Affordable Act of 2013. On July 1, because of Senate inaction, a temporary measure to keep interest rates low expired. As a result, the interest rates on new federal Stafford loans doubled from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent.

JEMEZ SPRINGSFor the past few days, the Thompson Ridge burn scar has experienced some monsoon rain events.

The Forest Service’s Jemez Springs Ranger Station and the Valles Caldera National Preserve (VCNP) shared these recent observations:

  • Saturday afternoon, July 6, there was some minor sheet flow flooding along the VC02 road in the lower Redondo Canyon (near the west gate), but no flooding was reported in the upper Redondo watershed (Union building and up-canyon) area.

Homemade Alcohol Involved in Inmate Melee

NMCD News:

Three Central New Mexico Correctional Facility (CNMCF) officers are recovering after being attacked Monday night during dinner clean up.

Thirteen inmates were assigned to the kitchen area of CNMCF to clean up from dinner service. Sgt. Manuel Romero saw one of the inmates, Andrew Hernandez, break the rules and confronted the inmate about his behavior. That’s when another offender, David Armijo, rushed the officer, kicked him in the stomach and hit him in the face.

FBI: Sending Hoax Letter Is Serious Crime

FBI News:

The FBI, U.S. Postal inspectors and state and local authorities are investigating two suspicious letters that were received at New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez’s office in Santa Fe Monday, July 8.

One letter contained a white powder substance. The other was unopened. At this point, field tests have been negative. Additional testing will be conducted at local laboratories.

Other responding agencies included New Mexico State Police, Santa Fe Fire Department and 64th Civil Support Team.

New Mexico Governor Attending Arizona Firefighters Memorial Today

Santa Fe – Gov. Susana Martinez will attend Today’s memorial service for 19 Granite Mountain Hotshots killed last Sunday when a wildfire overran them on a mountainside northwest of Phoenix.
