Almost everything we know about living in space ends at six months. Now that I am at the midpoint of my mission, heading into the second half of one year in space aboard the International Space Station, I am looking forward to exploring the science of this uncharted territory and stepping into the unknown.

My Russian colleague Mikhail Kornienko and I are living in space for one year to push the edge of our scientific understanding. Read More

Spitfires to Space Capsules

From Spitfires to Space Capsules, the National Air and Space Museum keeps getting better with age. The wonderful sky mural by Eric Sloane still covers one huge wall, and “Spirit of St. Louis” still greets visitors.

But in the 30 years since I last visited this museum, there have been many wonderful additions. I especially enjoyed all the new space exploration exhibits, especially the Mars Rover “Curiosity” and its travels on the red planet.

While the museum itself is free, there was a charge for a couple of the special exhibits. Read More

Los Alamos

Confined by tourist tummy to my hotel on the 5th day of my trip to Havana, I discovered I was not the only one. Dona Edna Flaminguez, of our tour group, 92 years young, had the same problem.

Learning there was a hotel nurse, I gathered Dona Edna, and we both went to the nurse’s office.

He was a handsome young man of about 40 something—Pedro Gonzales. We both briefly described our symptoms, and he spoke English fluently enough that we communicated. Then, he was looking for a word, and Dona Edna started Read More

The team sang songs with the kids, performed skits and played lots of Read More

One of the best things about traveling deeply, staying in a place for a while, renting a room or a tiny apartment from local people, is that you come to know the locals, and they come to know you.

If they discover you have certain interests, in history or art, for example, they will introduce you to things you would never otherwise run across.

When I went to India in 1985 my hosts Read More
