While traditional Acoma oral history reflects on a time far beyond our imagination, a time of creation and emergence onto this world, the Acoma people have always known of a special place called “Haaku,” a spiritual homeland prepared for their eternal settlement.

Recent excavations on Acoma Mesa tend to suggest Read More

I’m sure every traveler has some frustrating or angry story about taking a day tour and being funneled into a trinket store where the tour operator gets a kickback on whatever the tourists buy.

My own experiences in India and Thailand were so bad they caused me to stop taking tours altogether. That was a mistake.

Tour guides come in many ‘flavors’, just like the rest of humanity, and a Read More

Many years ago I attended a lecture by an anthropologist who had grown up in Cochiti Pueblo.

When he was a kid, his family lived in a traditional extended family home. Because the only heat in the small adobe house was a wood stove in the kitchen, the family gathered around the kitchen table in the evenings. The kids did their homework and his grandparents told stories. In this way they Read More

Businessmen From Philippines Tour Los Alamos

A group of eight businessmen from the Philippines and a couple of American tour guides visited Los Alamos last Saturday. One of the guides explained that this is the second year the group has traveled through Los Alamos as part of their tour of southwestern United States. The trip began three days earlier when the men flew from Malaysia to San Francisco where they visited for two days before flying to Albuquerque. The tour guides were waiting for them with a truck load of motorcycles, which they rode up I-25 toward Los Alamos. The guide said the group will head for Arizona next as part of their two-week Read More
