SFNF: Wildfires Start From Recent Thunderstorms

SANTA FE —Thunderstorms over the past few days have brought a significant amount of lightning to the area. Fires continue to pop up from lightning, as heat gets established in available fuels and conditions such as temperature and wind align.

The Middle Fork Fire was detected yesterday June 20, 2026. The fire is located on the Cuba Ranger District off Forest Road 531 in Middle Fork Ojitos Canyon near the Cuba and Jemez District boundary, 1.7 miles northwest of Seven Springs. The State Game and Fish Department stocked a total of 18,839 rainbow trout weighing 9,089 pounds. Most of the stocking will now be in Northern New Mexico. 

The Fourth of July holiday is coming up next week. Popular fishing destinations will be crowded.
