PEEC Shares Bug Zoo with Community

Families packed into the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) Tuesday to see a fascinating program about arthropods “bugs” including spiders, scorpions, beetles and more. It was given by The Harrell House of Natural Oddities, a traveling educational program, which local resident Linda Hull, at left, read about and then suggested to PEEC’s Becky Shankland. LANL and Sandia Scientists Collaborate with Artists

The University of New Mexico and 516 ARTS, a nonprofit art space in Downtown Albuquerque, are hosting this summer’s Scientists/Artists Research Collaborations (SARC), in conjunction with the International Symposium on Electronic Art (www.isea2012.org).

The New Mexico Consortium (NMC) and Lockheed Martin are sponsors for this year’s SARC program.

SARC will match artists with scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and Sandia to explore how a creative approach can inform scientific discovery and make the science accessible to a broader audience. The collaborations Read More

Kiwanis Presents Scholarship to Ben Schilling

The Kiwanis Club recently recognized Los Alamos High School graduating senior Ben Schilling pictured here with from left, his mother Lori , father Scott and Kiwanis Club President Kristy Keane. Schilling is attending New Mexico Tech in Socorro this fall to study mechanical engineering. He said that he had a great school experience at LAHS and when asked to name one positive item, he stated the students and teachers. Flash Flood Warning

A Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 8 p.m. today for northern Los Alamos … extreme southeastern Rio Arriba … northwestern Santa Fe … and east central Sandoval counties.

At 5:24 p.m., the National Weather Service Doppler radar continued to indicate a moderate rain continuing over the Las Conchas burn scar … but intensity was trending down.

However … very heavy downpours had occurred over the northern half of the burn scar and rapid runoff and flash flooding is expected to continue.

Pet Pangaea’s Offices Vandalized Overnight

Police are on the hunt for the person or persons who threw a rock through the plate glass window of Pet Pangaea’s offices in the former Quest Diagnostic space near Nectar and 15th Street sometime overnight. Owner Cyndi Wells said an employee discovered the broken window and found a rock inside the office area at about 11:30 a.m. today. No one had been at the offices before that time and the window wasn’t broken when the offices closed Tuesday evening, Wells said.
