SANTA FE ― Attorneys from MALDEF (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund) and the New Mexico Center on Law and Poverty (the Center) have filed closing briefs for their consolidated lawsuit (Martinez v. State of New Mexico and Yazzie v. State of New Mexico) against the State of New Mexico for its failure to provide all public school students a sufficient education as mandated by the New Mexico Constitution.

NM Representatives Break Stalemate On Fisher House

SANTA FE ― Last week, officials from the US Department of Veterans Affairs, the State Historic Preservation Office, the Fisher House Foundation, and other stakeholders agreed on final plans to build a Fisher House on the campus of the Raymond G. Murphy VA Medical Center in Albuquerque.

The agreement provides the framework for construction to proceed on the proposed facility that will house the families of military personnel and veterans while their loved ones are receiving medical care.

SANTA FE ― Officials at the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) announced that their technical and regulatory review of a pivotal site characterization document (entitled the “RFI Report”) addressing the Kirtland Air Force Base’s underground jet fuel leak is nearing completion.

New Mexico Film Office Announces HBO’s New Drama Series ‘Succession’ To Film In New Mexico

SANTA FE ― New Mexico Film Office Director Nick Maniatis announced Thursday that the new HBO Drama series “Succession” will begin principal photography in New Mexico after shooting previous episodes in New York.

Production on the episode being filmed in New Mexico will begin in mid-January and run through the end of January.

“‘Succession’ starts off 2018 in what we are confident will be another booming year of production for our film industry in New Mexico,” New Mexico Film Office Director Nick Maniatis said.

Cuba Ranger District Plans La Jara & Chaparral Piles Prescribed Burns

SANTA FE ― To take advantage of unseasonably favorable conditions, to include fuel moisture levels, air quality and weather forecasts, fire managers on the Cuba Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) expect to begin ignitions on the La Jara piles and Chaparral piles sometime between Jan. 22 and March 30 to reduce the risk of high-severity wildfire.

Weather permitting, crews are expected to treat up to 79 acres of the La Jara piles and up to 49 acres of the Chaparral piles.

Supreme Court Issues Rulings Providing Guidance On Motions For Pretrial Detention Of Criminal Defendants

SANTA FE ― The New Mexico Supreme Court issued two unanimous opinions Thursday addressing the evidence required for the pretrial detention of criminal defendants.

A constitutional amendment adopted by voters in 2016 gave judges the authority to order the pretrial detention of a defendant if a prosecutor files a written motion with the court and proves by clear and convincing evidence that the defendant should be held in jail to assure public safety.

The opinions by the court provide guidance to judges, prosecutors and defense attorneys on evidence

ALBUQUERQUE ― Families facing dementia or Alzheimer’s disease will have access to a free, education course in Pojoaque offered by the Alzheimer’s Association, New Mexico Chapter.

“Skills for Dementia Caregiving 101” (aka The Savvy Caregiver Program) is a FREE seven-session program designed for family and friends caring for a loved one with dementia, and presented by the Alzheimer’s Association, NM Chapter.
