DEA Releases 2015 Drug Threat Assessment

WASHINGTON  DEA Acting Administrator Chuck Rosenberg announced results from the 2015 National Drug Threat Assessment (NDTA), which finds that drug overdose deaths are the leading cause of injury death in the United States, ahead of motor vehicle deaths and firearms. 
 
In 2013, over 46,000 people in the United States died from drug overdose and more than half of those were caused by prescription painkillers and heroin.

SANTA FE  The New Mexico Office of Natural Resources Trustee and the United States Department of the Interior completed a cooperative natural resource damage assessment associated with natural resources in New Mexico, which had been injured, destroyed, or lost as a result of the release of hazardous substances into the environment.
 
They solicited a broad range of ideas for potential restoration projects from local, state, and federal agencies; nonprofit organizations; stakeholder groups; and private citizens.

The Department of Energy Environmental Management Los Alamos Field Office has prepared a Draft Environmental Assessment for the Chromium Plume Control Interim Measure and Plume-Center Characterization at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
 
The proposed action may include well pad and access road installation and maintenance, piezometer placement, and pipeline placement in the 100-year floodplain in Mortandad and Sandia canyons on LANL.

Los Alamos High School Graduate Lee Powell Wins Third Edward R. Murrow

Lee Powell, a 1994 graduate of Los Alamos High School was awarded his third Edward R. Murrow award for three stories he wrote and videotaped and put online for the Washington Post in 2014.  
 
Powell has been a video journalist for the Post for two years. He previously was with the AP in Washington for seven years and won two Murrows while working with them.
 
The awards gala was held in New York City Oct. 12 and his parents David and Irene Powell of Los Alamos were able to attend.

SFNF Waives Fees In Honor Of Veterans Day

SFNF News:
 
SANTA FE  The Santa Fe National Forest will honor Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, by waiving fees at many recreation sites and amenities.
Fees at all national forests and grasslands will be waived at many day-use sites, such as picnic grounds and developed trailheads, in cooperation with other federal agencies under the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act.
 
Veterans Day is the last fee-free day for 2015.
Fees will be waived at Santa Fe National Forest sites that normally charge a day-use fee and campgrounds that are not on the National Recreation
