YMCA: Nov. 15 Honors Charitable Work

In 1986, President Ronald Regan established Nov. 15 as a day to celebrate volunteerism, giving and charitable engagement.
 
The day is meant to honor all large and small accomplishments that end up helping others in our society and world, and it is known as National Philanthropy Day. The day is meant to honor what people do from the heart that makes a difference.
 
For The Family YMCA, the impact of 2014’s volunteer hours (year 2015 is still being compiled) is valued at $183,900. Last year a total of 283 volunteers donated 9,195 hours of time.

Hilltoppers Swimming Intrasquad Meet Results

The Los Alamos High School Hilltoppers swimming team kicked off its 2015-16 season with a Green versus Gold intrasquad meet Saturday, Nov. 7, at Larry R Walkup Aquatic Center.
 
The Gold team won the combined team scores by a 364-317 count over the Green team. Gold squeaked out a 187-184 win on the girls’ side, and won the boys’ contest by a wider 177-133 margin.
 
Leading the Gold for the girls was freshman Jillian Bennett who captured the 100 free (1:04.32) and 100 breast (1:16.96).

YMCA ‘On Belay’ Class This Weekend Nov. 14-15

 
YMCA News:
 
The Family YMCA will hold an On Belay Class noon to 2 p.m., Nov 14 and 15.
 
This class is open to those 14+ that are interested in learning to Top Rope Belay. The two-day class will cover proper harness use, how to tie-in, and how to use a belay device for climbers on an indoor top rope system.
 
Fee is $50 / $25 for Y members, space is limited. Participants must attend both days and pass the Top Rope Belay test in order to belay at the Y Climbing Wall. The YMCA Climbing Wall is open every day, free for Y Members or $10 for a Non-member day pass.

Dive-In Movie: Inside Out At Aquatic Center Nov. 13

A double feature dive-in movie is set for 7-8:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13 at the Aquatic Center.  
 
Disney’s Inside Out is playing and all age groups and families are welcome.
 
Tickets are $5, which includes treats, popcorn, soda and pool admission to see the movie on a giant theater-sized screen.
 
The Walkup Aquatic Center, in partnership with JJAB and the Teen Center, is showing 9-11 p.m. Jurassic World. Admission is free, and is for all high-school aged youth. There will be pizza and soda along with the theater-sized movie.
