‘Time Team America’ Provides Hands-on Field School

This week, 24 Zuni middle school students experience what it’s like to be an archaeologist through a hands-on field school connected to the PBS prime time archaeology television series Time Team America.

“We want to inspire the next generation of archaeologists and scientists,” says field school director Dr. Alexandra Jones, “especially populations underrepresented in the sciences.”

Sept. 4: Young people from Los Alamos County who recently visited the Sister City Sarov (Russia) will talk about their trip.

PEEC Offers New Afterschool Nature Clubs

PEEC News:

PEEC is offering two new clubs for kids in grades kindergarten through third:

  • Nature Detectives for grades K-1; and
  • Outdoor Explorers for grades 2-3. 

The clubs are 3:45-5:15 p.m. starting Tuesday, Sept. 4 and run every Tuesday through Nov. 27. Angelique Harshman and Beth Cortright will teach the clubs.

PEEC’s Nature Clubs are a great way to help children connect with the outdoors. Members will investigate local animals and plants, and connect with the wild side of the Pajarito Plateau through a variety of activities.  Read More

Bridge Work Begins Sunday on N.M. 84/285

NMDOT Traffic Advisory:

The New Mexico Department of Transportation will start work on a bridge maintenance project on N.M. 84/285 north of Santa Fe Sunday, Aug. 26.

The work will take place in the northbound lanes of the highway at mile marker 174.9 near Camel Rock Casino. 

The work will be done at night from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. and will be completed in two to three weeks, weather permitting.  

There will be single lane closures as crews work to stabilize the soil under the roadway and lift bridge approach slabs.

W.O.L.F. Comes to PEEC

Elke Duerr of the Web of Life Foundation comes to PEEC for an interactive presentation about wolves in the southwest at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30.

This presentation will be suitable for all ages, and will include hands-on activities and documentary film footage. The talk is free and open to the public.

Duerr will provide facts about wolves in New Mexico, and hands-on experiences from her “Wolf Trunk.”

The audience will be able to see wolf tracks and fur, and learn about how researchers radio collar a wolf to track its movements.

Luján Announces $600,000 in Drug-Free Communities Grants

U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico’s Third District announced today that five organizations in Northern New Mexico are receiving more than $600,000 through grants from the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program.

Public Scoping Underway for Bandelier Transportation Plan

The National Park Service has initiated the process to complete a Transportation Plan/Environmental Assessment to improve transportation conditions at Bandelier National Monument.

Over three decades, a number of studies and workshops have documented transportation and congestion management challenges at Bandelier National Monument, including traffic congestion at the park entrance and a lack of adequate parking in Frijoles Canyon.
