N.M. 599 Bridge Work Starts Aug. 20

NMDOT is alerting motorists to bridge work starting on N.M. 599 on the northwest side of Santa Fe.  

The project, which involves grinding, overlay, and joint replacement work, starts Monday, Aug. 20 and will be completed in two to three weeks, weather permitting.

The N.M. 599 bridges being worked on are over Via Abajo at mile marker 7.4, Camino La Tierra at mile marker 10.1, and Avenida Rincon at mile marker 13.9.

The work is being performed by two NMDOT contractors, Meridian and Villalobos Construction Company.

Diabetes Support Group Organizing

Come be a part of a Support Group for people affected by Diabetes. The Los Alamos Cooperative Extension Service is organizing and sponsoring a free Diabetes Support Group. 

Mary Beugelsdijk, a certified diabetes educator, and Paula Roybal Sánchez, the Extension Home Economist will provide leadership to the group. 

Meetings are scheduled 5:30-7 p.m., the second Monday of the month beginning Sep. 10 in the training room in the Los Alamos Community Building. The support group is free. Read More

Tonight is the Oppenheimer Memorial Lecture at 7:30 p.m. at Duane Smith Auditorium. The lecture, by Alex Fillippenko from UC Berkeley is on “Dark Energy and the Runaway Universe.”

Physiocartography, Author’s Speak & New Databases at Mesa Public Library

Bill Gilbert’s Physiocartography exhibit opens Tuesday, Aug. 21  at Mesa Public Library Art Gallery.

Gilbert, Lannan Chair of Land Arts of the American West program at UNM, will show his multimedia works created by walking predetermined grids, using a GPS, and recording his journey.

The exhibit consists of digital prints, photographs, and audio/video. Open during regular library hours. Reception and panel discussion on Saturday, Sept. 15, part of the Next Big Idea festival and ISEA2012 events.

The next meeting of the Los Alamos Geological Society begins at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21 at the Christian Church, 92 East Road.
 
The featured speakers are Dr Steve Becker and Dr. Paul Bradley. Their talk is entitled, “A travelogue of New Zealand’s North and South Islands.”

The September field trip will be to Shark’s Tooth Ridge between San Ysidro and Cuba.

To participate in this trip, meet at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 22 at Sullivan Field.

Rainwater Harvesting Workshop Offered Sunday Aug. 18 at PEEC

The Los Alamos County Department of Public Utilities is sponsoring a talk on rainwater harvesting at the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEECP from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19.
