Caldera Work Party Helps Calves Stay with Herd

A work party coming from the visitor center and another from the highway are separated by elk herd as Saturday’s fence tear-down endeavor got underway at the Valle Caldera National Preserve. Both the Colorado Peak and Bear Springs fires held Friday despite red flag conditions – hot, dry and windy weather.

Firefighters continue mop-up operations. Mop-up operations consist of putting out or removing burning material that’s near containment lines, cutting down standing dead trees and creating cup trenches to prevent debris from rolling onto unburned vegetation.

PEEC Offers Free Hike to Guaje Overlook

Today, June 10, Paul Arendt will lead a hike for PEEC to the Guaje Overlook. Hikers will meet at PEEC at 9 a.m. to carpool to the ski area for the hike of about 8 miles round-trip. 

Participants should bring a lunch and water, and dogs are welcome.

The Guaje Overlook hike goes through the beautiful Cañada Bonita area and beyond, offering views into the Valle De Los Posos, as well as pleasant, wooded trails.
