County Accepting Applications For Personnel Board

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County is accepting applications for eligible candidates for an immediate appointment to complete the term of a vacant seat on the Personnel Board.

This vacancy will expire March 31, 2024. Interested Los Alamos County residents who do not hold public office and are not employed by the County may submit an online application by visiting the County’s Boards and Commissions webpage and selecting “apply.” Applications will be accepted now until the vacancy is filled.

Library To Host Performance Of Aldo Leopold’s Journey: A Living History Portrayal Of The Famed Conservationist Aug. 12

The Los Alamos Public Library will host a special outdoor Chautauqua portrayal of Aldo Leopold. The performance “Aldo Leopold’s journey: a living history” will be performed 7-8 p.m., Saturday Aug. 12 on the stage at Ashley Pond Park.

Leopold, the father of wildlife ecology and our national wilderness system, was a forester, philosopher, educator and writer. His book, The Sand County Almanac, is one of the most widely read on conservation, and his words—written 100 years ago—are even more relevant today than when he wrote them.

Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) reports that smoke seen in the Los Alamos County area is from the Black Feather fire burning in the Rio Arriba/Sandoval County near the San Pedro Wilderness. While LAFD is monitoring this fire that is approximately 25 miles from the community and has burned 100 acres, the fire currently poses no threat to the Los Alamos community.

The Los Alamos Public Schools are starting their 2023 – 2024 school year this coming Wednesday Aug. 9. This means school buses and numerous juvenile pedestrians and bicyclists will be out on sidewalks and roadways before and after school.

Please be extra cautious in school zones and around crosswalks. Remember to obey traffic laws regarding school buses and speed regulations when school zone signs are flashing. Do not pass school buses with flashing lights and stop arms extended out.

LAPD: West Nile Virus Has Been Confirmed In Dead Bird In Los Alamos County

LAPD News:

The Los Alamos Police Department’s (LAPD) Animal Control Unit has responded to multiple calls for service related to dead ravens and crows. 

Approximately seven reports have been made to the Los Alamos Consolidated Dispatch Center (CDC) of dead birds in the downtown and western area of Los Alamos over the past week.   

As a precaution Los Alamos County Animal Control sent one of the deceased birds to the New Mexico Department of Agriculture Veterinary Diagnostic Services on July 31 to test for the presence of West Nile Virus. The results of the test were received on Aug. 3 and confirmed Read More

County DPU Proposes Adjustments To Electric Rates

The Department of Public Utilities (DPU) is proposing electric rate adjustments to be effective Oct. 1, 2023 and July 1, 2024. Two public hearings for the changes to the existing electric rates are planned.

The first public hearing will take place at the Aug. 16 Board of Public Utilities (BPU) meeting. If the BPU approves the proposed rate ordinance, a second hearing will occur on Sept. 26 at the Los Alamos County Council meeting. The rates must be adopted by the County Council before they can be put into place.

Community Survey Results For 20th Street Redevelopment

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos, New Mexico— Los Alamos County’s Community Development Department (CDD) thanks the 300 individuals who participated in the survey to provide feedback on the redevelopment of publicly owned parcels on 20th Street south of Trinity Drive.

The survey findings are posted on the project webpage at lacnm.com/20thSt.

CDD is working with consultants Wilson & Company to develop high-level conceptual plans to assess the range of redevelopment scenarios for this area.
