Bourque: North Mesa Roundabout Hazard

On May 24 I struck a boy on a bicycle at the roundabout in North Mesa. He was coming from Barranca. He received minor scrapes and is OK.

It was not possible to see this boy despite a witness claiming he had entered the intersection first. I first saw him only when he was darting in front of me, even though I had looked to the left more than once.

The reason is that my view of him was blocked by the roundabout itself. It has overgrown vegetation, large boulders, a mountain lion statue, and two evergreen trees whose branches reach the ground.

Los Alamos County Enters Stage 1 Fire Restrictions

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) Fire Marshal James Pepe has announced Stage 1 Fire Restrictions for Los Alamos County, effective today, July 7.

After consulting with other agency partners and reviewing the potential threat of wildfire, the Fire Marshal and the LAFD’s Wildland Division decided to enter Stage 1 restrictions.

“Seasonal fire restrictions are often developed based on specific criteria related to wildland fire risk, such as vegetation moisture content, weather outlooks, human risk factors and firefighting resource availability,” Fire Marshal Pepe said. Read More

White Rock Branch Library Open Sundays Starting July 16

LIBRARY News:

Los Alamos Public Library has announced that the White Rock Branch Library will open 1-5 p.m. on Sundays beginning July 16.

“Like many organizations the library has struggled with staffing,” Library Manager Gwen Kalavaza said. “We are hiring but don’t yet have the staff to open both libraries.”

For now Mesa Public Library remains closed on Sunday. Plans are underway to open both library locations on Sundays in the Fall.

The public is encouraged to bring their drones out to compete at Ashley Pond 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 8 during ScienceFest Discovery Day.

Participants will have an opportunity to fly in a competitive drone course and chance to win up to $100 in Chamber of Commerce Checks, good at dozens of businesses and restaurants in Los Alamos and White Rock.

The ‘Strange Trio’  sculpture beneath a stormy sky early Monday evening at the corner of Meadow Lane and Overlook Road in White Rock. This 20-foot-tall metal sculpture, created by Tommy Hicks of Shidoni Foundry and Galleries in Tesuque, was originally installed at Ashley Pond Park until 2008, when strong winds toppled one leg of the sculpture.
