Brief Power Outage Affects North Mesas & Barranca Mesa

COUNTY News:

A power outage affecting North Mesa and Barranca Mesa occurred around 4:50 p.m. today and was resolved around 5:10 p.m. by linemen from the Department of Public Utilities (DPU).

While the cause of the outage is still under investigation, DPU officials believe it was weather related. The outage affected customers on Feeder 16.

County: Motorists Are Reminded To Drive Safely

COUNTY News:

Los Alamos County is starting 2022 off with some much-needed precipitation. Citizens awoke this morning to approximately three inches of snow throughout the townsite and White Rock communities.

While crews with the Traffic and Streets Division worked through the night to ensure that the main roads are plowed, slick conditions linger due to freezing temperatures.

Snow fall is predicted to taper off throughout the day, but temperatures are forecasted to remain below 32 degrees until Monday.

County Issues Revised Agenda For Jan. 4 Council Meeting

The agenda for the upcoming Los Alamos County Council meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022 has been revised due to the resignation of Council Vice Chair James Robinson.

Council will hold an initial discussion concerning the procedure for filling this vacancy. After discussion, Council could choose to take action to modify this process.

Vice Chair James Robinson Resigns From County Council

Los Alamos County Council Vice Chair James Robinson has resigned effective Jan. 1. (See Robinson’s resignation letter below.)

As a result, County Public Information Officer Julie Williams-Hill said that the Jan. 4 council agenda is being modified to identify the next steps to fill Robinson’s vacancy.

According to the County Charter, Council shall “…appoint a qualified person to serve for the remainder of the unexpired term.”

Robinson served on council for three years, which included acting as council liaison for the Board of Public Utilities. Read More

Citizens Petition Council To Nix Nuisance Code Survey

Anna Dillane has served on the seven-member Los Alamos Community Development Advisory Board (CDAB) for two years. She resigned last week due to a disagreement over a recent community survey.

The survey was intended to gauge community opinion prior to rewriting the ordinances that deal with weeds, outdoor storage and property maintenance. The survey seeking input on the County’s Chapter 18 Nuisance Code closed Dec. 27.

County: Council To Resume In-Person Meetings Jan. 4

Los Alamos County Council will kick-off the new year resuming in-person meetings at the Municipal Building at 1000 Central Ave. 

While councilors and county staff will meet in Council Chambers, members of the public may choose to attend in person or continue to participate via Zoom.

County Christmas Tree Collection Jan. 3-7 & Jan. 18-21

The Los Alamos County Environmental Services Division will collect Christmas trees the week of Jan. 3-7 and Jan. 18-21.

Environmental Services staff remind Los Alamos residents to set trees on the curb on their regularly scheduled trash collection day during one of the Christmas tree collection weeks.

All lights and ornaments must be removed prior to collection.

No artificial trees will be accepted.

The collected trees will be processed into mulch and compost.

Pranksters Apparently Placed Traffic Cones On ‘Strange Trio’

Is appears pranksters placed traffic cones on the ‘Strange Trio’ metal sculpture spotted Sunday at the corner of Meadow Lane and Overlook Road in White Rock. The County has removed the cones. This 20-foot-tall metal sculpture, created by Tommy Hicks of Shidoni Foundry and Galleries in Tesuque, was originally installed at Ashley Pond Park until 2008, when strong winds toppled one leg of the sculpture.
