On Sept. 8, many community groups and organizations will participate in an annual event called College & Military Day. Champions of Youth Ambitions (C’YA), a small, local non-profit, hopes you will participate, too.

This fun, free event is a chance to show your colors to where education led you in your journey. If you didn’t go to college and weren’t in the military, that’s okay, too, but share your pride in whatever path has made  you the person you are today.

Reminder: Los Alamos Hilltopper 5K Race This Saturday!

There’s still time to register for the Hilltopper 5K! The race starts at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 19 at Canyon Rim Trail beginning at the west end of the Canyon Rim Trail in the Smith’s Marketplace parking lot.

The race will be an out and back course along the paved trail. The attached course map shows the route. A one mile run for kids is included and starts at 8 a.m. Packet pick-up will be between 3-7 p.m., Friday at the Aquatic Center, or beginning at 7 a.m. at the race location on Saturday.

LAFRW Announces 2023 Constitution Day Essay Contest

LAFRW News:

Constitution Day, Sept. 17, celebrates the U.S. Constitution and the freedoms it protects. The annual Constitution Day Essay Contest, sponsored by the Los Alamos Federated Republican Women (LAFRW), is designed to challenge students to learn more about the Constitution and to express original, thoughtful ideas in essay writing.

Essays are judged on how completely and clearly the ideas are stated and supported. Grammar, spelling and punctuation are also considered. Judging is blind. The contest is for students in grades 4-12 who live or attend school in Los Alamos County.

Last school year Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) recorded more than 230 incidents of cars passing school buses when the red lights were flashing and the stop arm extended, according to LAPS Transportation Director Keith Rosenbaum.

The first day of school for Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) for the new school year was Aug. 9. School buses are sharing the road with drivers commuting to work, as well as parents dropping off students at school and high school students driving themselves to school.

Highlands University To Host 10th Annual Painters Exhibition

The 10th Annual Painters Exhibition will open Sept. 10, 2023, at Kennedy Hall on the New Mexico Hghlands University (NMHU) campus, and will run through Oct. 31. This year’s invitational show will feature 41 artists and 123 paintings. An opening reception will be held 4-7 pm., Sept. 10.

Los Alamos Rotary Club Hears From Student Speakers

Lance Metcalf, a junior at Los Alamos High School, spent one week in July at a retreat in the Manzano Mountains attending Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA). With a PowerPoint as backdrop, Metcalf described the challenges of the climbing wall and the low and high ropes courses and told Rotarians about the motivational speakers who were part of the leadership week. ESPAÑOLA — Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) invites the community to a Celebration and Plaque Unveiling to honor Jemez House, Inc., for their generous donation to the Northern New Mexico College Foundation Endowed Scholarship Fund.

The $299,257 donation is the largest in the Scholarship Fund’s history. The unveiling is 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, in the Joseph Montoya Administration Building Rotunda.
