PEEC’s Geology Program For Kids Continues This Year

Youth ages 6 to 10 will love exploring geology at the Los Alamos Nature Center in the Pebble Pups program, organized by the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC).
 
This program helps kids embark on a journey to learn about rocks, fossils, and local geology through active games and activities with Patrick Rowe of the Los Alamos Geological Society Denise Matthews, an experienced Pajarito Environmental Center (PEEC) Educator. The Pebble Pups school-year program meets one Tuesday a month and is perfect for new or returning Pebble Pups members.

$9 Million Lawsuit Filed Against Education Department For 232 Violations Of IPRA Law

Los Ranchos book publisher, Barbe Awalt, Senior Partner of LPD Press/Rio Grande Books (RGB), has filed a third lawsuit against the New Mexico Public Education Department and NMPED Custodian of Records, Beverly Friedman, for $9,427,800.
 
The lawsuit, filed in the Second Judicial District Court in Albuquerque, asserts that New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) and Beverly Friedman, violated the Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA) in 199 “3-day” letters by putting the wrong wording on the letters and 33 letters that were completely missing.

2017 Condition Of College And Career Readiness: LAHS Demonstrates Significant Progress On ACT Scores

Each year, ACT provides an analysis of high school graduates college and career readiness. Based upon the report, Los Alamos High School class of 2017 had higher scores than in the past five years, and higher than the state as a whole.

The ACT is a set of curriculum-based tests to measure educational development in English, mathematics, reading, and science, and is used to measure how prepared a student is for the first year of college coursework.

In September, the Karen Wray Gallery is offering two beginning art classes; oil painting and watercolors. The classes take place in the gallery at 1247 Central Ave., Suite D-2, in Los Alamos.

Several of Wray’s students have their work now featured in the gallery.

Learn about the 2017 total solar eclipse and see the full-dome planetarium film Phantom of the Universe at the Los Alamos Nature Center.

Three local astronomers who watched the eclipse from within the path of totality, will share stories, photos, data and videos from the Aug. 21 total solar eclipse at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9 planetarium. Galen Gisler, Rick Wallace and Paul Arendt traveled north to see the recent solar eclipse and gathered photos, video, and data to help study the Sun’s inner corona. ALBUQUERQUE — Gov. Susana Martinez has announced that 110,000 more New Mexico students have access to high-speed Internet at school.

The Governor began an initiative to connect every New Mexico student with high-speed Internet at school by the 2018 school year. Since her 2015 announcement, 99 percent of New Mexico’s public schools now have access to high-speed Internet – and the partnerships leveraged through the initiative have reduced costs to connect students by more than 60 percent.
