New Mexico Pianist Gavin Laur Is A Division Finalist In MTNA Senior Piano Competition

Gavin Laur, a Santa Fe native, will travel to Santa Barbara, Calif. in January to compete as a Division Finalist in the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Senior Piano Competition.

Laur, the son of Ruth and Paul Laur, earned this opportunity after winning the Senior Division of the M1NA Statewide Piano Competition. A Junior at the New Mexico School for the Arts, Laur has been studying piano for 10 years and is currently a student of Stein way Artist Jacquelyn Helin.

Aspen Elementary Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Nov. 17

Aspen Elementary School will celebrate the completion of its newly built and renovated school by hosting an open house/ribbon cutting ceremony Nov. 17.

The event is 4:30-6 p.m. with opening remarks beginning at 4:30 p.m. Aspen’s Tiger Choir will perform. Following the ribbon cutting, guests will take self-guided tours. Staff members will be available to answer guests’ questions. Cake will be served in the new Dining Hall near the end of the event.

The Los Alamos Middle School Walk Run Club invites all 7th and 8th grade students and staff to participate in the Marathon Challenge until the end of the school year.

In connection with Red Ribbon Week Oct. 23-31, Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD) New Mexico is launching a new social media pledge campaign that asks teens to #ProtectUrSelfie by staying alcohol-free until 21 and never getting in the car with a drinking driver.

While most of us are familiar with the Red and Blue Dot Trails in White Rock Canyon, there are a number of smaller, lesser-known canyons in the area that are worth exploring.

Experienced hiker Paul Arendt will lead a PEEC hike at 9 a.m., Nov. 1 to discover the wonders of some of these canyons. Arendt will lead a small group on a looping hike, which will include several smaller canyons south of White Rock and east of N.M. 4.

Several parents spoke out about drug problems at the Los Alamos Public Schools during Public Comment at Thursday’s School Board Work Session at Los Alamos Middle School.

One parent said other parents are in denial about drug use in the high school.

“Teachers are seeing students wasted in class. Teachers need education on the symptoms of drug use. The high school is a safe haven for drug use,” he said.

The Guidance Department of Los Alamos High School will host the 2nd Annual Career Fair 6-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3 in A-wing at which more than 25 career options will be represented by local employers and employees.

GO Bond C Will Provide $500,000 For UNM-LA EMT Classroom Upgrades

This fall voters in Los Alamos County will have the opportunity to invest in the state’s public colleges and universities without any increase to their property taxes.

General Obligation Bond C (also referred to as GO Bond C) proposes a total of $141,000,000 for New Mexico’s public colleges and universities, of which $500,000 will be allocated to UNM-LA. UNM-LA will add another $250,000 for a total capital investment of $750,000.
