PEEC: Expert Craig Allen Addresses Forest Fire Trends and Predictions Aug. 19

If anyone can make sense of current trends, and surmise future prospects for forest fires in northern New Mexico, it’s expert Craig Allen, who has been studying changes in the ecology of the Jemez Mountains continuously since 1982.

In a free presentation at the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, Allen will talk about changes in the forest, and what they mean for chances of fires in the future.

Freshmen Orientation Wednesday At LAHS

LAHS News:

The Los Alamos High School Freshmen Orientation is promptly at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13in Griffith Gymnasium. 

All incoming 9th  grade students should arrive by 7:50 a.m. and report to the grass area outside of the gym lobby. Orientation will run until 11 a.m.

Buses are available from Los Alamos schools to shuttle students to Freshman Orientation at the following times:

  • Pinion Elementary: 7:30 a.m.
  • Chamisa Elementary 7:30 a.m.
  • Barranca Elementary: 7:30 a.m.
  • LAMS: 7:35 a.m.
  • Aspen Elementary: 7:40 a.m.

Little Forest Fall Fiesta Sept. 6

Little Forest Playschool’ annual Fall Fiesta and Silent Auction is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sept. 6. The Fall Fiesta is one of three events held each year to raise funds for Little Forest, which has been part of the Los Alamos community for more than 60 years.

The Fall Fiesta is held on the two-acre playground area at Little Forest Playschool, 3880 Villa St.

Fall Fiesta festivities include a carnival with activities, animals, games, music and food.

Keep New Mexico Beautiful has granted Los Alamos Middle School with several opportunities to enhance education and landscaping for the new school year.

The first grant project involves adding plants around the school exterior and conducting a campus clean up prior to the start of school.

Kiwanis Presents Sholarship to Jing Xie

The Los Alamos Kiwanis Club recently presented Jing Xie with a scholarship. From left, Xiaohong Shen, mom; Michelle Xie, sister; Jing Xie  and Kiwanis President Karen Kendall. Xie was recognized as an enthusiastic community volunteer since she arrived in Los Alamos in 2006. She volunteered at the Mesa Public Library in her elementary school years. During her high school career, Xie volunteered in Teen Court for three years serving as an attorney and member of the Jury. Los Alamos School Board member David Foster tendered his resignation to President Judy Bjarke-McKenzie earlier this week.
 
“I put my house up for sale thinking it would take six to nine months to sell but amazingly it sold in just six weeks,” Foster said during an interview from San Diego today.
 
Foster explained that he had intended to complete the remainder of his four-year term, which ends in March, but felt he better take the offer made on his home. He added that everything is going well regarding the school
