Herbal Remedies for Children at PEEC Oct. 13

Visit PEEC from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13 to learn about effective herbal remedies for children. 

Kristi Beguin, an experienced herbalist, will give a talk on how to use herbal medicines to treat common childhood illnesses and enhance children’s immunity.

Participants in the class will learn how they can be in charge of their family’s health and wellness concerns using common herbal remedies.

‘Small Business Saturday’ and United Way TEAM UP!

The United Way of Northern New Mexico is offering local businesses an opportunity to team with them in a local shopping initiative on Small Business Saturday, to be held Nov. 24.
Businesses who choose to participate will be promoted through local (Los Alamos and Espanola) media, and to all employees at Los Alamos National Laboratory through the employee giving campaign.
Businesses will be asked to contribute a minimum 5 percent of sales to the United Way on that busy shopping day.

High Tea On the Hill at 1 p.m. Sunday

The United Way Youth Team will host High Tea on the Hill from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14 in the lobby of Los Alamos High School. 

A variety of aromatic teas will be served along with:

  • cucumber and dill sandwiches;
  • egg salad sandwiches;
  • cranberry and oranges scones;
  • Ghirardelli’s brownies; and
  • pumpkin cupcakes with cinnamon-cheese frosting.

A truly delightful array will be enjoyed. 

A student violinist will provide lovely background music for guests and all of this for only $15.

Celebrate Los Alamos Family Council’s 50-Year Anniversary Wednesday!

Rebecca Oertel, a Forest and Range Plant Ecologist at the VCNP will present the talk.

Oertel grew up in Los Alamos, obtained a degree in biochemistry, and has worked in the Jemez Mountains Area for the past 18 years as a biologist.

Dog Dies After Saving Owner From Fire

In the middle of the night of Sept. 27, Shawn Perraglio was woken up by his dog Bruce because his house was on fire.

Apparently the fire was really out of hand already; Shawn had to crawl out of the house on his hands and knees.

Once Shawn was out of the house, he realized that Bruce did not follow him. Shawn attempted to go back in the house to rescue his dog.

Shawn had to break a window to get back into the house; he has suffered lacerations to his tendons and artery in his hand and arm.

Shawn’s efforts were brave, but his dog Bruce did not make it.

Masonic Waffle Event Aids Habitat for Humanity

The community is invited to attend the Masonic Waffle Breakfast from 7:30-10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 at the Los Alamos Masonic Lodge at 15th Street and Canyon Road.

The charity breakfast costs $7; $3 for children age 6 and under, with the proceeds going to benefit the Habitat for Humanity – Espanola Valley and Los Alamos Building Kindness Home Repair Program
