Daily Postcard: Abert’s Squirrel Scurries Around Bandelier

A sturdy Abert’s squirrel with its fancy tasseled ears is spotted at Bandelier National Monument. Cones of the Ponderosa Pine are a favorite food of Abert’s squirrels. They will turn the cone slowly, much like you may rotate an ear of corn as you eat it, peeling away the cone scales to reach the meaty seeds. The new buds and inner bark of the Ponderosa are also quickly consumed by the squirrel. You may think this would be bad for the Ponderosa; however, Abert’s also eat ectomycorrhizal fungi. It’s that time of the year again! The female goose is nesting.

Animal Control has been receiving multiple calls with concerns for her or her whereabouts.

“We promise, she is just fine. She is nesting and will stay there for quite a while. She doesn’t need anything but privacy.” –County spokesperson

Ed (the male) is back to hanging out with his own reflection in the windows. He is not depressed or sad and does not need any extra intervention.

Los Alamos High School To Host Arts & Music Festival

LAPS News:

The community is invited to enjoy an evening of arts and music at the annual Arts & Music Festival hosted by Los Alamos Public Schools (LAHS). This event will take place at 5 p.m., Thursday, April 23, at LAHS 1300 Diamond Drive.

The evening will include concerts by elementary, middle school and high school choirs as well as band and orchestra performances. The LAMS and LAHS jazz bands will also perform, along with several groups from the Jazz Project.

Artwork by students across the district will be on display.

This event is free and open to the public.

UNM-LA Registration Opens For Summer & Fall Classes

Registration for UNM-Los Alamos (UNM-LA) summer and fall 2026 semesters is now open. Registration runs through June 5 for the summer and Aug. 28 for the fall, but is highly encouraged before the start of classes. The summer semester starts June 1 and the fall semester starts Aug. 17.

This week the Los Alamos High School Hilltoppers Girls and Boys Golf teams have the Los Alamos Spring Invitational at home and the boys have the Twin Warriors away game. The Girls Softball team has games at home and away, and the Boys Baseball team has games at home and away. The Boys and Girls Track and Field teams have meets at the Harper Invite at ABQ Academy.
