Council Seeks Volunteers for DPU Charter Review Committee

COUNTY News:

The County Council announced Jan. 29 that it is re-opening the process to apply for membership on the Department of Public Utilities’ Charter Review Committee.

Council will appoint a five-member committee to study utilities-related sections of the County’s charter.

The Committee will include one member of Council, one member of the Department of Public Utilities’ Board, and three citizens who meet any one of the following qualifications:

1) A member of the community with Management experience;

2) A member of the community with Accounting experience; and

Most people do not get very pumped-up over trash, but 2012 was an exciting year for waste and recycling in Los Alamos County!  

After many years of hard work, the County was able to successfully launch the glass drop-off recycling program, bringing back an important recycling option for our citizens.

UPDATE: Workers Inadvertently Excavate Manhattan Era Ordnance – Military Arrive on Scene

Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities contract workers excavating dirt in the Los Alamos Canyon Resevoir Thursday afternoon picked up a military ordnance in their front loader. They didn’t realize they had the volatile device until they were unloading the dirt in Bayo Canyon near the old sewer plant. Members of the Los Alamos Bomb Squad, police and firefighters responded to the scene. Police secured the area until military explosive experts from Kirtland AFB arrived this morning to render the device safe. Last Day to Vote Early!

Today, Friday, Feb. 1, is the last day to cast a pre-election day vote or get an absentee ballot at the County Clerk’s Office.

The Clerk’s Office is across from the Reel Deal Movie Theater, in the modular office directly behind the Demo Garden on Central Avenue at Oppenheimer Drive.

The actual voting day and last day to turn in absentee ballots is 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Community Building in Los Alamos and at the Los Alamos County Fire Station in White Rock.

There is no question that Jeannette Wallace was an outstanding woman who represented Los Alamos well at the state legislature for many years.  

Wallace was elected 11 times to represent District 43 in the State House. She served 22 years there, which is quite amazing.
