Chaparral Prescribed Burn Begins Today

SANTA FE —The Santa Fe National Forest Cuba Ranger District expects to begin the 60-acre Chaparral prescribed burn today, Jan, 24 northwest of Fenton Lake and Seven Springs, 10 miles southeast of Cuba and nine miles northwest of Jemez Springs.

Smoke will be visible from Gillman, Jemez Pueblo, Jemez Springs, Cuba, Rio Rancho and Albuquerque.

Smoke from prescribed fire can be a nuisance to some people and a health concern for others, such as children, pregnant women, senior citizens, and those suffering from allergies, asthma, chemical sensitivities, or other heart or lung diseases.

Los Alamos County is unique in also being a municipality. “In the United States, a ‘municipality’is usually understood as a city, town, village.”

 
Los Alamos County Municipal Building and Los Alamos County Town Hall are names that convey this uniqueness.
 
Los Alamos Citizens’ Building and Los Alamos Community Town Hall are good in that they convey citizenry and community. We already have a Los Alamos Community Building. The County Council is the governing body, however, and County includes both WR and Townsite.

I ask the citizens of Los Alamos to join me in voting “yes” in the 2013 Los Alamos Public Schools bond election.

These are challenging times for our local and national economy, but we can still afford to pay for the most important things for our community, such as good schools.

Passing the 2013 bond will not increase property tax rates; it will maintain them at the level set in 2009. The school board and administration have done a good job of planning and prioritizing how this money will be spent; see details at laschools.net/2013BondElection

 I offer a different idea for naming the new municipal building.
 
The idea is to use the opportunity to honor and publicize a precious concept of governance and citizenship rather than for any individual in the process.
I suggest the name “Los Alamos Community Town Hall.”
 
“Community” emphasizes that Los Alamos is uniquely a county-town, yet is one community.
 
“Municipal Building” and “Town Hall” are historical synonyms. “Town Hall” is a fresh, yet old and powerful concept of democracy.

Mail In Ballot Do’s and Don’ts…

The Los Alamos County Clerk’s Office reports as of Friday, Jan. 18, that 4,000 ballots have been received for the Special School Bond Election. 

On Jan. 8, the Clerk’s Office mailed out 13,826 ballots.

The Clerk’s Office would like to remind registrants of several do’s and don’ts:

  • Do sign the outer envelope. If there is no signature on the outer envelope, the ballot cannot be counted.
  • Don’t have someone sign your ballot on your behalf. If you cannot sign the outer envelope, an ‘X’ is acceptable as your signature. Although it is not required, someone may witness
