Los Alamos County Councilor Apologizes for Behavior During Trip to Russia

Los Alamos County Council Vice Chair Ron Selvage apologized today for an indiscretion he had with a woman while on an official visit to Moscow and Sarov last September.

“I did make a mistake on the Russian trip and it’s something that I regret and that I’m going to be paying for,” Selvage said this morning. “My wife and I are working through this and we would appreciate some privacy during this difficult time.”

The mistake Selvage is referring to is an inappropriate relationship he had with Nora Arbuckle, a member of the Sister Cities Initiative

‘Scale of Justice’ Sculpture Installed at Justice Center

The “Scale of Justice” sculpture created by Jemez Springs artist Troy Williams was installed today in front of the Justice Center at 2500 Trinity Dr. 

The Arts in Public Places Board (APPB) and Los Alamos County plan to hold an official dedication of the sculpture at 3 p.m., Aug. 22.

This sculpture displays 12 jurors from all walks of life, based on actual community members. They are made of steel as is the scale on which they stand.

Health Council Sponsoring Town Hall Aug. 6

The Los Alamos Community Health Council (LACHC) is sponsoring a Faith Community “Health Speak Out” Town Hall Meeting noon-1:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6 at the First United Methodist Church, 715 Diamond Dr.

The goal of the Town Hall is to gather information from the faith communities, agencies and people involved with providing emergency and basic needs services.

LACHC will also share a summary of its 2011-2012 LACHC Los Alamos County Health Profile.

Bring your own brown bag lunch. Drinks will be supplied.

Diamond Drive near Golf Course
Starting Monday, July 30, after the morning commute, traffic control will be in place on Diamond Drive in the vicinity of the Golf Course to repair a leaking irrigation line. The outside lanes of both northbound and southbound traffic will be closed and the bike lanes will be shifted inwards to provide a safe work zone for shoulder work.

Local Celebrities Needed for Dunking Event

TEEN CENTER News:

The Los Alamos Teen Center is hosting a School of Rock.

Musicians from the Teen Center are forming bands to perform 2-7 p.m., Aug. 11 at Central Park Square.

Local well-known people are needed to participate in a dunk tank activity – to date, Teen Center Director Michelangelo Lobato is the sole person to volunteer to be dipped in the tank.

During the Aug. 11 event, the Teen Center also will sell food, hold a bake sale and conduct a silent auction.

 

All proceeds from the School of Rock event go toward purchasing musical instruments for the Los Alamos Teen Center. Read More

Council Seeks Public Comment Before Aug. 7

The Los Alamos County Council is seeking community input on the Valles Caldera National Preserve’s new Public Access and Use Plan (Plan.)

The Plan, part of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) released by the Trust in June 2012, presents six options for locating and constructing a new visitor and interpretation center, as well as developing infrastructure and access to the many uses offered at the Preserve.

Bridge Club Hosts 3-Day Sectional Tournament

The Los Alamos Contract Bridge Club is hosting the “Atomic City Sectional”  tournament at the Betty Ehart Senior Center Friday through Sunday.

Up to 100 visitors will be in town, some staying two to three nights and looking for a good meal.

If you want to play, sessions start at 2 p.m. Friday, July 27.

A partner is helpful, but not necessary. Visitors welcome.
