New Mexico Ranks Low in Educational Attainment and Median Wages

ALBUQUERQUE—The best way for states to foster a productive economy is to invest in a well-educated workforce, according to a new paper published by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI.)

Unfortunately, New Mexico ranks low in both educational attainment and in median wages.  

The report, “A Well Educated Workforce is Key to State Prosperity,” shows that the states with the highest wages and most productive economies are the states with the best-educated workforces.

CommUnity University – Intergenerational Day of Learning

C’YA News:

UNM-Los Alamos is partnering with C’YA (Champions of Youth Ambitions) to present CommUnity University 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7. The cost for this intergenerational learning opportunity is $10.

Students of all ages are able to attend five learning sessions in areas ranging from introductory guitar, photography and science to art history.

The Los Alamos Bridge Club will hold a session on learning to play bridge with Jerry Fleming and friends, while Octavio Ramos will offer a course on self-defense for those with a cane or walking stick.

School District Works to Balance Costs and Class Size

The Los Alamos School Board met Wednesday at which Superintendent Gene Schmidt updated the Board on efforts to solve the problem of large second grade classes at Barancca and Aspen Elementary (24 students) and Mountain Elementary (27 students). Instead of a half-time instructional assistant, a full-time assistant will be added at Barranca. Full-time aides are already in place in the second grade classes at the other schools. Coach and Athletic Director Magazine has announced the two recipients of the 2013 Interscholastic Sports Program of Excellence award, honoring the nation’s best athletic programs for their off-the-field achievements.

I moved to Los Alamos in 1969. At that time there was no institution of higher learning present in the community. The community was negotiating with UNM to establish a branch. They wanted a way to enhance the learning opportunities for those in the community. In 1970, UNM established a branch and it became known as UNM-LA.

I was the first biology teacher hired at the new branch. For the first seven years I taught General Biology, Plant Taxonomy, Human Anatomy and Physiology, and Ecology. Then later I taught community education classes.
