PEEC Launches Hiking Los Alamos 102 Series

Los Alamos is surrounded by beautiful hiking trails, but not everyone may feel comfortable exploring them on their own.

For that reason, the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) in collaboration with the County Recreation Department, held a summer series, Hiking Los Alamos 101, which aimed to make Los Alamos residents and visitors comfortable and confident about hiking on Los Alamos’s trails.

School Board Holds Special Meeting Friday

The Los Alamos School Board will hold a Special School Board Meeting at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23 at the Los Alamos High School Speech Theater, 1300 Diamond Dr.

PEEC Hike up Pajarito Canyon Saturday

Community members are invited to join Paul Arendt at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, as he leads a pleasant, intermediate level hike up Pajarito Canyon for PEEC.

The 2.5 hour, three mile hike will be suitable for families, so all ages are encouraged to join. Friendly dogs are welcome. Hikers will meet at the trailhead parking area on West Jemez Road, which is 0.5 miles south of the intersection with Camp May Road..

Stuart Corliss is the new Boys and Girls Swim Coach at Los Alamos High School for the 2013-14 school year.

LAHS Hires New Swim Coach

The Los Alamos High School Athletic Department would like to announce the hiring of Stuart Corliss as the Boys and Girls Swim Coach for 2013-14 school year.

Coach Corliss received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his MBA from UCLA Graduate School of Management.

He has been involved with club and college coaching. He also swam for Stanford University and was an NCAA All-America. While swimming for Stanford he served as team captain two of those years. He coached the De Anza Cupertino Swim Club in 1980 that went to the Junior National Championships.

Kiwanis Awards Scholarship to Paulina Majewska

The Los Alamos Kiwanis Club presented Paulina Majewska with a scholarship recently. Paulina will be attending the University of New Mexico and will study pre-med biology. From left, Beata Majewska (mom), Paulina Majewska, and Don Casperson, Kiwanis President. Paulina was selected because of her strong participation in Key Club and she was elected club treasurer during her senior year.
