End-Of-Life Options Act Passes New Mexico Senate

STATE News:

SANTA FE – Today, the Senate passed legislation enabling terminally ill, mentally competent adults in New Mexico, who are given six or less months to live, the option to obtain medication allowing them to pass away peacefully.

The measure passed with a 24-17 vote and will now come back to the House to concur with Senate amendments, before heading to the Governor’s desk.

SANTA FE – New Mexico’s cap on certain types of damages for injuries from medical malpractice does not violate the constitutional right to a jury trial, the state Supreme Court ruled today.

The Medical Malpractice Act (MMA) limits damages at $600,000, excluding punitive damages and compensation for medical and rehabilitative care. The cap applies to damages for such things as pain and suffering and a loss of future earnings.

SANTA FE – New Mexico state health officials today announced 160 additional COVID-19 cases.
Los Alamos County reports no new cases today so the total remains at 489 people who have tested positive for COVID-19. (County totals are subject to change upon further investigation and determination of residency of individuals positive for COVID-19.)

Today’s update includes 2 more deaths in New Mexico related to COVID-19.

Local Vaccine Clinic Monday March 15 – Appointments Only

COUNTY News:

Nambe Drugs, Los Alamos County, and the New Mexico Department of Public Health (NMDOH) are holding a vaccine clinic Monday, March 15 at the Auxiliary Gym at Los Alamos High School, 1300 Diamond Dr.

Appointments are required to receive a vaccine. No walk-ins will be accepted.  

Note: This clinic includes booster appointments for individual who received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine Feb. 14.

County officials remind individuals that upon appointment check-in they will need to provide the NMDOH confirmation code as well as insurance and Medicare cards as applicable.

A bill that would allow the state of New Mexico to adopt air quality and hazardous waste rules more stringent than federal regulations survived a challenge Friday from Senate Republicans, who had previously stalled the measure with a procedural maneuver that kept it in limbo for days.
