Cerro Pelado Fire: The Cerro Pelado Fire, 7 miles east of Jemez Springs, started Friday, April 22, during an epic wind event. The cause of the fire is under investigation. It is burning in ponderosa pine and mixed conifer trees and brush. The east part of the fire is burning in the fire footprint from the 2011 Las Conchas Fire. The Santa Fe Animal Shelter continues to assist anyone who the fires have impacted in northern New Mexico, including the housing of displaced animals, food and other supplies.

The shelter is at maximum capacity; however, shelter officials have transferred some of their animals to Best Friends in Utah, making room for animals that have been evacuated due to the fires. Read More

Los Alamos County Manager Steven Lynne and Emergency Services Commander Beverley Simpson provided an update on the Cerro Pelado Fire during tonight’s Los Alamos County Council meeting.

Lynne commented that for the majority of today, the winds were not as bad as expected, which was a positive. He said the winds were not so bad that air support had to be halted.

Firefighters Recover Body From Canyon In White Rock

Los Alamos firefighters and police officers on scene this evening where firefighters recovered a body from the area where Pajarito Canyon opens out to White Rock Canyon near Hell’s Hole in White Rock. Police Cmdr. Daniel Roberts told the Los Alamos Daily Post at the scene that firefighters came fully equipped and were able to quickly recover the body of an older man. Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos County and the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Los Alamos Field Office issued the following update this evening to the community on the status of the fire burning in the Jemez Mountains.

Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) crews from Station 3 responded to a call Tuesday afternoon of an outdoor fire near Beryl Street in White Rock.

When crews arrived, the fire was out. The crews and fire investigators on scene quickly learned what happened.

A Good Samaritan who called in the fire was passing by and saw flames coming from underneath a trailer in someone’s backyard. They acted quickly, attached a hose to the house spigot and extinguished the fire. The Good Samaritan then dialed 9-1-1- to notify the fire department.

SFNF Issues Closure Order For Cerro Pelado Fire Camp

SANTA FE – The Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) has issued a closure order to restrict public access to the area surrounding the base camp for firefighters working on the Cerro Pelado Fire.

The order is effective now until Dec. 31, 2022, unless rescinded earlier.

The Cerro Pelado Fire started on April 22 about 7 miles east of Jemez Springs on the Jemez Ranger District.
