Unveiling And Reception For New Mural Commemorating The Centennial Of Route 66 Jan. 4 At New Mexico History Museum

A mural commemorating the Route 66 Centennial by New Mexico artist Molly Mendenhall will be unveiled Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026, at an opening reception in the lobby of the New Mexico History Museum (NMHM).

The artist will attend the event and talk about the mural painting process and her design. Visitors can take photos of the vibrant mural, “Mother Road Coming into Color,” which illustrates a transition from a sepia-washed and stippled (small dotted) 1930’s scene to a modern vision of Albuquerque coming into color in the distance.

Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to join the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) and Los Alamos Mountaineers (LAM) for an intermediate snowshoe or cross‑country ski adventure, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026.

With only a few spaces left, early registration is encouraged. This point‑to‑point winter outing will travel from the Las Conchas Trailhead to the East Fork Trailhead, covering 4.5 miles and approximately 800 feet of elevation gain.

 monthly breakfast social on Tuesday Jan. 6 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. at Muy Salsas at 1315 Trinity Drive.

There was limited stocking activity last week and most of the stocking activity was in Southern New Mexico. This area had a taste of winter. Temperatures may not be as warm as they normally would be for this time of year.

Small streams at higher elevations are starting to ice up. The Rio Pueblo, Santa Cruz River and Rio Costilla are already reporting icy conditions that prevent the measurement of streamflow. Lakes are starting to develop thin ice, but it will be a while before the ice is thick enough for safe ice fishing.
