Local piano virtuoso Juanita Madland is competing in the Cliburn Amateur Piano Video Contest. The winner will be awarded automatic entry into the seventh International Competition for Outstanding Amateurs in 2016.

Competitors submitted a performance video of 5-10 minutes in length and the winner will be determined by public voting online.

Roaring Jelly, a local Celtic/ Americana band, will play and Donna Howell, a local dance teacher and radio personality, will be the caller at a contra dance Saturday, Aug 16 at the Posse Lodge in Los Alamos.

Before the dance, which starts at 7:30 p.m., there will be a short lesson at 7 p.m. The $8 admission fee will benefit the Los Alamos Sheriff’s Posse. Partners are not necessary.

Los Alamos Soprano Melissa Riedel, along with Albuquerque pianist Darby Fegan, will present a recital Saturday, Aug. 16, at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 601 Montaño Road NW in Albuquerque.

The recital will begin at 4 p.m., and includes pieces from several different composers, including Richard Strauss and John Jacob Niles.

The Los Alamos Concert Association announces its 69th season, which will feature the added attraction of a newly refurbished venue. 

The first phase of a multi-year upgrade of the Duane Smith Auditorium on the campus of Los Alamos High School was completed in July.  New seating, carpeting, paint and improved hall lighting will greet concert-goers at the first concert in September. The show Manhattan has been broadcast on WGN America for three weeks now. Manhattan portrays life in Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project.

If anyone caught the second episode, there was a scene where townspeople attended a play-one of many activities used for entertainment during wartime. There were actually performing arts groups during that time, and one of them was Los Alamos Light Opera (LALO).

Everfound will perform in concert free at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at White Rock Baptist Church, 80 N.M. 4.

A year ago, before starting my freshman year at Los Alamos High School, my dad took me to a Christian music festival in Seattle, Wash.
