Last week I caught a part of an early 1940s movie with Tommy Dorsey playing a jive talking bandleader.

He was talking about “cool cats” and “daddy-os” and described some music as being “far out.” Whenever I say something is far out, I get looks like I’m John Denver’s unholy ghost. Smith’s Food and Drug is sponsoring live music at the 2013 Los Alamos County Fair and Rodeo at Ashley Pond Park. The store is sponsoring an appearance by the Renegade Mountain Band from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. next Saturday, Aug. 10.

Carl Newton, now in his 18th year as a docent volunteer for the Santa Fe Opera, will present a program on the Opera’s 57th Season at 10 a.m. today, Monday Aug. 5 at the Betty Ehart Senior Center (downstairs classroom.)
