When I was a kid growing up in Los Alamos in the 50’s and 60’s I listened to KRSN.
 
KRSN programming back then was a musical potpourri – the play-list included Beatles, Kenny Rogers, Frank Sinatra, the Kingston Trio, all of the top recording artists of the day played in no particular order.

Taos School of Music Holds Auditions for 2013

Taos School of Music Executive Director Kathleen Anderson Knox announced auditions for Young Artist positions in the prestigious summer chamber music program.

Approximately 125 of the most accomplished young classically trained musicians will audition for the coveted 19 slots.

Robert McDonald will conduct piano interviews in person only in New York City Jan. 19-20; Borromeo String Quartet hears string auditions in New York City Jan. 21-22 and Boston Jan. 24.

This year’s season will run June 16-Aug. 4 and showcase the complete Beethoven String Quartet Cycle.

Big Band to Honor Memory of Cathy LeClaire

The Los Alamos Big Band (LABB) will be presenting their annual Christmas Dance 7:30–10:30 p.m., Dec. 27 at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Parish Hall, 3700 Canyon Road.

The dance will be a special performance to honor the memory of Cathy LeClaire, a former member of the Big Band vocal quartet “The Mountainaires.”

What is Music?
 
Music is defined as sound organized in a meaningful way. This is a somewhat problematic definition.
 
First off is the problem of “sound.” Then there is the problem of “organized.” And there is the problem of “meaningful.”
 
Sound is simply vibration moving through a medium. That could be anything – air, water, earth. If a tree falls in the forest there is a sound. Actually a multiplicity of sounds as vibrations occur, which are at different frequencies.
