Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory Launches Nationwide Astronomy Program For Rural Schools

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) is launching a nationwide strategic investment in the future of rural education called Smithsonian Scientists Taking Astronomy to Rural Schools (STARS).

The Smithsonian STARS program will equip schools with a donated telescope, accessories such as solar lenses, ongoing teacher training, and aligned astronomy lessons designed to inspire curiosity and strengthen science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education for the nation’s approximately 9.8 million rural schoolchildren. Los Alamos Public Schools was well represented at the recent New Mexico National History Day regional contest and state competition. Nineteen students from Piñon Elementary, Los Alamos Middle School and Los Alamos High School competed in the regional contest in Santa Fe in March.

BLM Seeks Input For November 2025 Sale Of Oil And Gas Leases In New Mexico And Oklahoma

SANTA FE — The Bureau of Land Management New Mexico State Office yesterday opened a 30-day public comment period to receive public input on plans to include 21 oil and gas leases, totaling 8843 acres. The comment period ends May 21, 2025.

The BLM completed scoping on these parcels in March 2025 and is now seeking public comment on the parcels and the related environmental analysis. The BLM will use input from the public to help complete its review of each parcel.
