Letter To The Editor: About The Council And Our Sheriff

By MATT WOLK
Los Alamos

To the community of Los Alamos,

The Los Alamos County Council has written a resolution to prevent the Sheriff from doing his job as prescribed by state law. As everyone should know, state laws trump county ordinances.

The people of this community should also know that an elected sheriff derives his authority directly from the people, which is why he outranks all other law officers in his jurisdiction.

The Sheriff’s Office has authorities that the county police department does not have. Because of this fact it is in the best interest of the people of this Read More

Letter To The Editor: Apparently Council Didn’t Get Memo

By JOHN N. HORNE
Los Alamos Deputy Sheriff

All around this nation we are seeing the rebellion of the electorate, in both parties, against those who have been loaned the power to govern by the people of this Country. Whether it is the rise of Donald Trump, or the inability of Hillary Clinton to put away Bernie Sanders, it is obvious that the vast majority of the people in this nation are tired of deceitful, self-serving politicians who place their agenda ahead of the will of the people.

Apparently the Los Alamos County Council did not receive the memo. Even after months of watching America rebel against Read More

Letter To The Editor: Sheriffs’ Role Is To Be Interposer Between The Law And The Citizen

By PAT CANFIELD
Los Alamos

I agree with John L. Horne. The role of a sheriff is to be the interposer between the law and the citizen. He should stand between the government and citizen in every issue pertaining to the law.

Why would any county council want to do away with a county sheriff when a sheriff’s position is there for the good of the citizens? It makes absolutely no sense.

Letter To The Editor: Regarding No Laundromat

By DONNA REIL
Los Alamos

I agree fully with the few people who wrote in about the removal of the laundromat we had here in Los Alamos. What was the county thinking?

We don’t need more businesses that most people do not use. A laundromat is a necessary business in a small community. Not all people have washers and dryers available to them.

If you want people to stay “on the hill” then bring back businesses that we will use, businesses that we need here, restaurants that aren’t so expensive and stay open on the weekends and at night.  Give people a reason to want to live here, not move away!

Thank you! Read More

Letter To The Editor: Councilors And Candidates, Take Notice … There Are Many Who Care … Do You?

By ELLEN WALTON
Los Alamos

Thank you, Khalil Spencer, (letter) for speaking out for those who need basic services in this town.

Why are these services disappearing? As I watched those doing their laundry on the last days that our only self-serve laundry was open, I also wondered how people could stay in this town and work without such necessities. I could imagine myself in that position because I also relied on self-service laundry for many, many years. A neighborhood without a laundry facility was uninhabitable for me.

I find that in our pursuit for a grocery store with Read More

Letter To The Letter: LANL Bypass Needed

By EDWARD BIRNBAUM
Los Alamos

Gail Little’s recent letter to the Los Alamos Daily Post describing her encounter with LANL security reminded me of a similar incident in which I was involved last year. Several of us went over to the area on LANL property where the (last?) sale of discarded Lab equipment and furniture was going to be held the following morning so we could take a look (through the fence) at what was going to be up for sale.

Unbeknownst to us, this was a violation of LANL security and a truck drove up to us and a security guard got out carrying an AK47-type weapon. Like Ms. Little, we explained Read More

Letter To The Editor: A Breath Of Fresh Air, Justice Judy Nakamura For New Mexico Supreme Court

By VERNON N. KERR
Los Alamos

Some things that have been around for about 40 years are musty or crusty and need to be aired out. They still need just a freshening of good fresh air.

The New Mexico Supreme Court has been completely packed with Democratic Party judges since 1980. One philosophy of government and that is probably not the best thing for the people of New Mexico.

Recently there has been that breath of fresh air in the person of Justice Judith Nakamura, a Republican. She was appointed by Gov. Susana Martinez to fill the vacancy left by Judge Bratton. Judith (*Judy) Nakamura is no stranger to

Letter To The Editor: How About A Charter Amendment To Require That Councilors Do Your Laundry

By KHALIL SPENCER
Los Alamos

Insofar as we may already have one Charter Amendment on the ballot this year, i.e., to abolish the office of elected sheriff of Los Alamos County,  I will suggest a second one after a chat with a counter staffer at one of our few remaining gas stations in Los Alamos: County Council will henceforth be responsible for ensuring laundry can be done frugally on The Hill.

Buying some groceries on the station located on what used to be “Conoco Hill”, I mentioned to the service staff member that it was nice to have at least one of the previous long time gas station Read More
