Letter To The Editor: Media Has Made Trump & Sanders

By Dr. T. DOUGLAS REILLY
Los Alamos

The news media no longer simply reports the news, they make the news. The media has made Trump and Sanders because they are novel and exciting. The consistent polling that rates Hillary Clinton as untrustworthy is a fiction promoted by the GOP and news media. In spite of claims to the contrary, they are primarily interested in the bottom line.

I’m 73, and I remember Edward R. Murrow and the Murrow boys; that was a time when media news was considered a ‘loss leader’ and was as honest and truthful as is possible.

Donald Trump is a great actor, lier, and flip-flopper; the Read More

Letter To The Editor: White Rock 87544 Forever!

By BARRY CLUTCHINSON
White Rock

I am proud to be from White Rock, and like many of my fellow White Rockians, I have chosen to display my pride with a large White Rock 87544 tattoo on my chest.

I also have a tattoo of the White Rock on my back. I have nothing against people from Los Alamos. Some of my best friends are from Los Alamos. I just don’t think it right that they want to take our zip code away from us.

Are the people of Los Alamos going to pay for us to get tattoo modifications? What am I going to do with the

Letter To The Editor: Wake Up, Los Alamos, The Tourists Are Here!

By DOROTHY AMSDEN
Los Alamos

This lovely Sunday morning on my walk around downtown I had the pleasure of encountering two groups of visitors who had no idea where to get information about the historic district.

I noticed a couple with two children at the south end of Bathtub Row. I said hello and asked if they were visitors. Yes, from Denver, they said. I explained why Bathtub Row is so named and showed them where to find the temporary History Museum. They knew a smattering of Los Alamos history but needed further information.

Continuing on my walk I noticed four adults looking at the Oppenheimer

By JEAN MARR and SHELLY HIGGINBOTHAM
Los Alamos

Anyone passing by Guaje Pines Cemetery this Memorial Day could not help but notice the large number of American flags delicately placed at the graves throughout the cemetery.

Many who went to pay respect to loved ones found those individuals had not been forgotten on the day set aside to honor and remember.

Thank you Jack Clifford for volunteering your time and personal resources to remind us about the true meaning of “Memorial Day”.

Chandler: It’s About Neighborhoods

By CHRIS CHANDLER, Candidate
Los Alamos County Council

At the League of Women Voters Forum recently I expressed my commitment to improving Los Alamos while preserving its essential character.

In particular, I believe the health and personality of the community are rooted in its neighborhoods. Robust neighborhoods and strong relationships among neighbors make for a vibrant and healthy community.

The Comprehensive Plan should express the aspirations of the community as a whole and should be designed to foster the strong neighborhood concept. The current update of our Comprehensive Read More

Letter To The Letter: Zip Code 87547

By ROBERT REEDY
Longtime resident of White Rock

Concerning zip code 87547 for White Rock: Will it be “deja vu all over again” (to quote Yogi Berra)?

The USPS recently sent us a letter that our zip code in White Rock starting July 1 will be 87547. When they built the branch post office in White Rock a decade or so ago, we were to be zip code 87546. They even had that number on the outside of the newly-built building.

But then they changed their mind, and kept us as 87544.

If you look at the zip code on the outside of the White Rock P.O. branch building, the last 4 of the zip code is faded, because it was a cheap Read More

Letter To The Editor: System Working Well Across America Should Not Be Tossed Out

By Former Police Officer
Los Alamos County

I do not believe that the Los Alamos County Sheriff’s Office should be eliminated. I actually believe that it should be expanded and some of the duties held by the Police Department should be transferred to the Sheriff.

Duties such as court security, prisoner transports, process service, sex offender registration, and even control over the county jail, which are all traditionally duties conducted by the sheriff’s departments across the state.

These could easily be conducted by the Sheriff and just a few deputies in Los Alamos. Deputies who Read More

As the State Representative of District 46 and an employee of Los Alamos National Laboratory for more than 30 years, I offer my endorsement for Maria Sanchez-Gagne as the democratic candidate for District Attorney for the 1st Judicial District, which includes the counties of Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Rio Arriba.

The person most qualified to represent the Democratic Party is Maria Sanchez-Gagne. Maria has dedicated 20 years of her professional career prosecuting tough felony cases and protecting innocent victims. She also knows the need to treat Read More

Letter To The Letter: Pot-Holed Road Last On List

By STEVAN PATTILO
Los Alamos

Perhaps it is time to revisit the original road improvement project for West Road. As envisioned, the route was to climb from near the ice rink, rising higher on the south canyon wall to rejoin the newer upper stretch of the existing road.

As it is, the existing pot-holed condition of the road will continue to remain last on the list to be considered by the county for repair. An added safety concern that could be remedied by changing the road location; proper shoulders could be added since there are no usable shoulders for pedestrians and bikers on the narrow existing route. How The Hen House Turns: Living Peacefully With Squirrels

By Carolyn A. (Cary) Neeper, Ph. D.

Sometimes—not often—the message we humans receive from wildlife can be so clear it’s unmistakable. It can erase our presumptions or negate accusations of anthropomorphizing.

We understand when dogs are excited and happy, or not. Years ago, the snarl and open claws told us that our cat Oscar was not happy with the neighbor’s dog. However, Oscar “loved” our dog Boots. They hunted gophers together when they weren’t curled up together napping. The clues to their inner life were obvious.

So it was yesterday– we understood Read More
