Letter To The Editor: Endless Roundabouts!

By R. WAYNE HARDIE
Los Alamos

Over the past few weeks there have been several excellent letters about the proposed N.M. 502 roundabout in front of the Hilltop House at Central and Trinity.

I was on the Transportation Board when this concept was first proposed in 2012, and I didn’t like it then. I am just completing another term on the Transportation Board. The 90 percent design plan was presented by NMDOT at our March 2016 meeting, and I still don’t like it. These comments, of course, are mine alone and I am only speaking for myself, not the Transportation

Letter To The Editor: Modern Monetary Theory (MMT)

By DOUG REILLY
White Rock

When President Nixon took the US Dollar (USD) off the gold standard in 1975, the only thing backing it became the confidence our government and the rest of the world has in it and the US economy.

The dollar is still the major reserve currency in the world, so its support is very good. Modern Monetary Theory states that a country that prints its own currency can never be unable to pay its debts, can never have a national debt or deficit, and need not have a balanced budget.

There are many economic theories, but this seems the most logical

Williams: A Closer Look At Lop-sided Roundabout Proposed For Central – N.M. 502

Los Alamos

The flier sent out to announce the latest about the N.M. 502 project does not give any feel for what the roundabout will look like or behave like. So, I thought I would provide the citizenry with a diagram of what one would expect in a standard roundabout versus what is proposed to be built. The proposed is a far cry from standard.

I have overlain color markings onto the latest drawings from the NMDOT in the figure. For those who wish to actually be enquiring minds, I am adding some notes after the figure to help you understand this “abnormal” Read More

Letter To The Editor: More On Proposed Roundabout

By KEI DAVIS
Los Alamos

Regarding the proposed roundabout, and the most recent letters, here and here, I’d like to express an opinion, and two facts.

I’d like to express my agreement (opinion) with the letter-writers, though Mr. Mead is more optimistic with a 20 percent expectation of Roundabout Valhalla compared to my 0 percent.

One fact is that unlike anywhere else I walk in Los Alamos, our current roundabout is a golden opportunity for guaranteed successful suicide-by-crosswalk for a pedestrian.  One need merely assert right of way in crossing at

Letter To The Editor: Do Whatever Can Be Done To Stop Roundabout Installation At Central And Trinity

By Concerned Citizen
Los Alamos

I agree completely with William C. Mead’s letter about the proposed roundabout at Central and Trinity. The roundabout at Diamond and San Ildefonso works but just barely and clearly demonstrates some of the problems with roundabouts:

First when a roundabout is used to link roads that have very different traffic densities as both of the above mentioned roundabouts would do, the traffic from the busy route completely ignores traffic from other directions. The traffic from Diamond going into the roundabout at San Ildefonso just plows through. Traffic from Read More

Letter To The Editor: How To Respond To Mass Shooting Situations And Emergencies

Los Alamos

Here’s an interesting article from CNN on how to minimize deaths and injuries in a mass shooting situation.

Conventional wisdom, habits and instinctive behavior are not the most effective tactics. More untrained civilians carrying guns is not an effective strategy, either.

I think the information here is worth knowing and sharing: click here. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Regarding Planned Roundabout

By WILLIAM C. MEAD
Los Alamos

Round and round we go?

Would you consent to costly, painful surgery that might or might not improve your health and could result in increased blockage of one of your major arteries?

The wheels of transportation progress have turned and we’re now faced with the prospect of having our very own two-lane roundabout (RDB) built on Trinity Drive (N.M. 502) at Central Avenue, beginning in the Spring of 2017.

Over the past 20 years or so, roundabout proponents have generated three large proposals. The most recent grand plan, in 2011, proposed reducing Trinity to two lanes and Read More

Letter To The Editor: Pro-Life Is Much More Than Anti-Abortion

By DOUG REILLY
Los Alamos

For most of my 73 years, I’ve listened to an almost continual rant for or against abortion. Now the Texas case in the Supreme Court has brought it again to the front. This summer in Maine I read a very interesting letter in the Boothbay Register and wrote a response to the Register.

I will attempt to write the gest of these two Letters; the first letter:

Pro-Life means nurturing, providing moral guidance, helping learn to walk, talk, make decisions, helping with homework, providing funds for college, i.e. providing a sound basis for life. Anti-abortion

Letter To The Editor: Excellence At Sombrillo

By ED EMERSON
Los Alamos

I have recently spent about a month in the Sombrillo Nursing and Rehabilitation facility on Sombrillo Court because of a shoulder injury. I am a long-time Quemazon resident.

I would like to bring to the Los Alamos community’s attention the excellence of the recently renovated facility. The highly motivated and experienced therapy staff working in a large and beautiful rehabilitation room with cutting edge equipment was central to my healing. I am so appreciative of the physical and occupational therapists – Danielle and Rita. These specialists

Letter To The Editor: Don Taylor Says Thank You

By Don Taylor and Family
Los Alamos

On behalf of myself and my family, I would like to say thank you to everyone that has reached out to us during this difficult time.

My wife Heidi was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer in December 2008. Heidi was a strong woman and with modern medicine, the doctors at UNM Cancer Center, and her family and special friends, she as well as all of us fought this as long as we could.

She was special to all who knew her and she is greatly missed. The support from this community has kept us strong and will keep us moving forward.

Heidi and I always thought Los Alamos was a special Read More
