Letter To The Editor: Follow-Up On County Recreation Needs & Economic Development

By FRAN BERTING
Former Los Alamos County Councilor

The analysis by staff and Councilor (Susan) O’Leary of where our CIP money has been spent, as shown in the Los Alamos Daily Post of Thursday, Feb. 25, is indeed eye-opening and very valuable as we proceed to allocate our available resources in the current CIP discussion.

Unfortunately, this analysis may reinforce some of the complaints I have heard repeatedly: “The Government is spending all this money on luxurious digs for itself and on roads, at the expense of citizens’ quality of life needs!”

Remember, one of the Read More

Letter To The Editor: Will CIP Proposals Actually Produce Projected Benefits?

By EDWARD BIRNBAUM
Los Alamos

The presentations made at the last CIP public forum held by County Council could be categorized as either “business” focused or “recreational/quality of life” focused.

Comments at both the forum and in articles in the Feb. 28 edition of the LA Monitor state that the business-focused proposals are much more likely to produce a return-on-investment and be more valuable to the community. However, I would like to point out that much of the value associated with these proposals is based on the assumption that these newly developed parcels of land, including the Read More

Letter To The Editor: Note Inspired By John Bartlit’s ‘Tales Of Our Times’

By DOUG REILLY
White Rock

This Thursday’s Los Alamos Daily Post carried a column by John Bartlit, Tales Of Our Times: what Do Our Words Really Mean?.

It inspired me to write this note; it approaches word meanings from a different direction, their origin (etymology). Even as a young lad, I liked to read dictionaries; I especially became interested in word origins. Most dictionaries have some indications of the language roots and original meanings.

For example, consider the word PHYSICS, which applies to many people in Los Alamos. Physics is the Greek word for NATURE.

Letter To The Editor: Thank You To Senator Heinrich For SCMC Meeting

By PETE SHEEHEY
Los Alamos County Councilor

I attended the recent National Nuclear Security Administration Supply Chain Management Center (NNSA SCMC) Small Business Information Meeting (see Roger Snodgrass article “Small Business Pow-Wow…”).

I want to thank Senator Heinrich for his efforts to make this meeting happen, in response to concerns of many constituents about SCMC contracts potentially taking business and jobs away from New Mexico.

At the meeting, many local business people were able to talk with SCMC and other government officials about the details of Read More

Letter To The Editor: County Sheriff

By TERRY GOLDMAN
Los Alamos

I confess that while I was away at my granddaughter’s birthday, I didn’t read the Los Alamos Daily Post online.

Nonetheless, I have to comment about (George) Chandler’s long article. He’s told me everything except what I need to know: why duplication (of law enforcement authority) is a bad idea.

Apparently that is as self-evident as, in the case of how to make a watch, not needing to mention that, for it to run properly, you need to pull the crown out to set the time and

Los Alamos Daily Post

Robert Kauzlaric’s play, “Lions in Illyria,” opened Friday night at the Los Alamos Little Theatre. The play is a reimagining of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night” with animal characters.

The play is aimed at children and is best suited for ages 7-12. Younger children will not understand the complicated plot and

Letter To The Editor: Scalia

ROY M. MOORE
Los Alamos

The death of Justice Scalia has been treated with great dignity and respect by all persons involved. However, I lost my respect for the man when he decided in Bush vs. Gore that the state of Florida should stop counting votes so that an unelected Supreme Court could determine the next president.

By every counting method, Gore would have won that election had the counting of votes in a democratic republic be allowed to continue. Mr. Scalia decided that Mr. Bush would be harmed if he lost, I guess not caring about the harm to Gore and the nation and the lost respect of

Letter To The Editor: Saddened That Living In Los Alamos Pains You So Much

By DELIA CRUZ-MURPHY
Los Alamos

Good Afternoon Gerry, (Letter

I am saddened to hear that living in Los Alamos pains you so much. I understand from your continuous stream of negative communications that you are not satisfied with the development of Los Alamos, and the endless taxation to pay for said improvements.

As you have expressed many times in the past, you feel we are unfairly over taxed in Los Alamos. There were times in the past I would have had to agree with your sentiment of the improper use of funds from the taxation and bond issues … I felt at times that if I had Read More

Letter To The Editor: About Recreation Development

By GERALD ANTOS
Los Alamos

I just finished reading the story about recreation development and I must confess that Los Alamos County Council Vice Chair Susan O’Leary has just proven beyond a shadow that she wants to completely empty the pockets of the citizens of Los Alamos County to finance her fiefdom’s infrastructure well beyond reason and frankly Susan O’Leary makes me want to be sick.

Is there really no end to her spend thrift ways? I was under the assumption that our County Government wanted to be fiscally responsible but here again we see that O’Leary actually says she Read More
