Letter To The Editor: Time For County Council To Act

By DOUG PIPPIN
A seriously concerned citizen
White Rock

As I read the recent articles concerning our loss of three fine police officers, and the manner in which we lost them totally destroys my faith in our elected County Council.

Without regurgitating all that transpired, I would encourage readers, tax payers and voters in our county to read the articles and make up their own minds. I, as one individual would request the County Council to stand up and do what should have been done some time ago and request the resignation of Mr. (Harry) Burgess as our County Manager for his role

Letter To The Editor: The State Of Youth/Junior Tennis In Los Alamos

By Lloyd Wilton, LAHS Boy’s Tennis Coach
By Billy Wilton, former LAHS Boy’s Tennis Coach

A main objective of the Los Alamos Tennis Community is to give kids opportunities they otherwise would not have. The tennis population on the hill has a passion for the sport. The high school boys’ team boasts 30 boys while the girls program will top 40 or more this season. It is essential to note these two programs are run on four tennis courts each, numbers that have out grown our facilities.

In addition, 65 to 70 kids participate in summer tennis programs on a four court site. The need for an effort Read More

Letter To The Editor: They Who Can Give Up Essential Liberty To Obtain A Little Temporary Safety Deserve Neither Liberty Nor Safety

By DOUG REILLY
White Rock

Benjamin Franklin was, of course, one of the Founding Fathers of the USA. He was a Quaker, and he gave us a lexicon of great quotes, such as the title of this email. The first way I remember seeing this was slightly different:

“Those who would give up some liberty to obtain a bit more safety, will soon have neither…”

My favorite quote of his is:

“There never was a good war, or a bad peace…”

Today we hear constantly about the FBI’s argument with APPLE regarding opening a late model iPhone in the name

Letter To The Editor: Los Alamos Sheriff History

By DIMAS M. CHAVEZ
Formerly of Los Alamos

I am a former resident of Los Alamos. Moved there with my parent in August 1943 and went on to attend school 1-12 finishing in 1955. I worked at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (as it was known back then) as a full time employee, summer student, and later under the Harold Agnew, and Don Kerr administration as the Employee Relations Manager.

When Los Alamos was still a closed community we were provided with quality security by the Blue Uniformed Security Guard Force, a branch of AEC. When Los Alamos became an incorporated community the city officials were Read More

Letter To The Editor: Statement Regarding My Brother’s Case

By JAMES CHROBOCINSKI
Los Alamos County Councilor and
Owner/Broker Zia Realty Group

While I am very happy that my brother, Randy Foster, has been vindicated. I find it appalling that it came to this. In the beginning all Randy wanted was his name cleared and to be reinstated.

This waste of money and time could have been prevented from the start. I am very troubled by the mishandling of the case and by false statements provided by the county.

While I had recused myself from the discussion while the case was active, I believe it is the Councils’ duty to now look closely at this

Letter To The Editor: Richard Marquez’ Act Of Service…

By LAWRY MANN
Los Alamos

Richard Marquez recently left the Los Alamos National Laboratory after working there for over 10 years.

Most people do not know that before working at LANL he worked as a DOE official in the Albuquerque office. During his tenure there he provided significant assistance to Los Alamos County.

Los Alamos County borrowed over $110 million to finance their hydroelectric facilities and other projects. After the bonds were issued the market changed and it was to the County’s advantage to refinance those bonds. By doing so they could save thousands

Letter To The Editor: Two Sides To Every Dispute

By CHELLY YOUNG
Aspen Elementary

It’s 2 a.m. and I can’t sleep because I’m angry. I’m angry because of the discrimination lawsuit brought against my principal, Kathryn Vandenkieboom, and Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS) by Zeynep Unal.

I have been employed by LAPS for 27 years and have had the privilege of teaching at three of the five elementary schools. I feel like I cannot, in good conscience, remain quiet about this suit.

For obvious reasons, I cannot publish details regarding my issues and the knowledge I have, which is another reason I can’t sleep. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Nursing Home From Heaven

By KEN ROSS
New York

I am writing to express my gratitude and appreciation to Sombrillo Skilled Nursing Center in Los Alamos.

My mom, who just turned 89 last week, has been living at Sombrillio for the last year and a half. During this time I have been so very impressed with every facet of the facility.

I live in New York and even though I come to visit as often as possible, I never have to worry about the care mom is getting. In fact, the staff feels like family to me and when I arrive or when I check in on the phone, everyone is so friendly and helpful.

My sister visits mom at least once

Letter To The Editor: New Mexico Economy

By JOSEPH KOECH
Recent Edition To New Mexico Workforce
Osceola Energy Solar

Extending the residential and commercial rooftop solar tax credit is essential to keeping a New Mexico industry growing and producing economic benefits for New Mexicans.

After graduating from Georgetown University, I aspired to return home to New Mexico, join the workforce, and make a positive contribution to my community.

After turning down job opportunities in Washington DC, the experience of searching for a job in Albuquerque was disheartening. Here in New Mexico there

Letter To The Editor: Council Does Represent Citizens When It Works To Be A Good Partner To The Lab

By PETE SHEEHEY
Los Alamos County Councilor

Former County Councilor Robert Gibson makes some valid points in his recent letter “County Council Puts Government Before Citizens,” about the County’s Federal Legislative Agenda.

However, much of his objection is based upon text in the Agenda that Council specifically instructed staff to revise. He credits Councilor Henderson and myself for expressing reservations about the portion of the Agenda discussing why the county would benefit from continuation of a “for-profit” LANL contract ($17M/year in GRT revenue), but
