Letter To The Editor: Music Teachers Give Thanks

By LAPS MUSIC TEAM
Los Alamos

Have you ever enjoyed listening to the marching band at a parade and watching the drumline cadence by?

Maybe you’ve been to a football game and seen the marching band sousaphones or the xylophones entertaining the crowd? Or perhaps you’ve been to an elementary music performance and seen your child or grandchild singing from the risers? Possibly your child is a cellist and is able to use a cello at school – eliminating the need to haul one from home.

All of these musical supplies – drums, sousaphones, xylophones, cellos,

By LINDA HULL, Project Chair

Rotary Club of Los Alamos

The Rotary Club of Los Alamos would like to extend a sincere thank-you to both Gary Clark of GWC Looping and Smith Auditorium Manager Ross Mason for spending two days recently with students and staff re-looping the hearing assistive system (audio loop) in the auditorium.

Although the system was originally installed in August, the aging building presented unexpected challenges and not all designated seats were adequately served. We are delighted to report that all of the auditorium’s center section, rows A-P (including the wheel Read More

Letter To The Editor: Bears Ears National Monument?

By JODY BENSON
Los Alamos

Here in Los Alamos, we prefer data to anecdotal (so-called) information, and the data about public support of public lands as presented in the recent letter in the Los Alamos Daily Post about Colorado College’s Poll on Conservation in the West is heartening: 78 percent of New Mexicans value conserving public lands.

Los Alamites with access to the mesas and canyons appreciate the quality of life open space provides. In fact, 16 years ago, many of us put those values into action as we worked diligently for two years to save our beautiful Valles Caldera from development Read More

Letter To The Editor: School Funding Election – Vote Yes

By DAVID CARROLL
Los Alamos

Between 2003 and 2008, I and several other interested citizens served on the Bond Oversight Committee for Los Alamos Public Schools (LAPS).

We were tasked with assisting LAPS in reviewing and prioritizing projects funded by the various bonds, referenda, etc., passed by Los Alamos voters.

The committee was an interesting assignment and offered detailed insight into how the New Mexico PED allocates funding and interacts with local school districts. One fact repeated frequently was that

Letter To The Editor: Respectfully Disagree With Rosy View

By KENNETH HANSON
Los Alamos

Letter to the Editor, response to George Chandler’s comment: I respectfully disagree with your rosy view of Obama’s reign, George, and feel compelled to respond.

Obama did not “end” two wars; he simply ended the US involvement in Iraq by withdrawing our troops on an arbitrary publicized schedule. That turned out to be disastrous for Iraq, as well as the Middle East and the World because the ensuing turmoil undoubtedly aided the growth of ISIS. Even though he reversed that policy in Afghanistan, he did not leave enough troops there to stabilize the country. Read More

Op-Ed: Why New Mexico Needs Bail Reform

Justice Charles W. Daniels

By Justice Charles W. Daniels
New Mexico Supreme Court

On recommendation of the New Mexico Supreme Court, a bipartisan group of legislators has introduced Senate Joint Resolution 1, which would allow voters to decide whether to reform antiquated bail provisions in our state constitution. Currently, the constitution guarantees the right to get out of jail before trial for virtually all defendants, no matter how dangerous, if they can get their hands on enough money to post bond or if they can make payment arrangements with a bail bondsman.

Letter To The Editor: Wow! Wonderful Letters In Support Of HB33 Referendum

By JUDITH BJARKE-MCKENZIE
Los Alamos

Wow! I have read such wonderful letters, in support of HB33 Referendum for our schools.

Los Alamos has schools that we can truly be proud of. Money at the state level is pretty lean and in the past few elections we have passed the referendums to show our support of education. This is how we contribute to our future.

The maintenance of our facilities, as well as keeping up technology and providing activities all help to provide excellence in education. The good news is, your tax rate won’t go up.

Also, our out of district kids are children of people Read More

Los Alamos Daily Post

Los Alamos Little Theatre opened “Once A Ponzi Time,” Friday to loud foot-stomping laughter from the audience. My family sometimes describes me as “sense of humor deprived” and I was laughing out loud for most of the play.

This is only the second production of “Once A Ponzi Time” and Read More
