Letter To The Editor: Actions Reflect Negative Bias Against Sheriff

By JOHN N. HORNE
Los Alamos

Members of the Council:

I am both dismayed and disappointed that my elected servants are conducting themselves in such an unprofessional manner with regard to our Sheriff. You can attempt to camouflage your actions in the verbiage of public safety and fiscal responsibility but, it is obvious to us that your actions reflect a negative bias against the Sheriff and the people who elected him.

As politicians you should realize that Los Alamos has twice decided that we require a more professional and responsive Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Lucero

Giuseppe Verdi’s tragic masterpiece Rigoletto provided a decisive boost to the struggling composer’s already promising career in 1851, and opened a new era for nineteenth century opera after its introduction at La Fenice near the Venice Rialto. Saturday’s performance at the Santa Fe Opera Read More

Op-Ed: New Mexico Businesses Need Patent Reform

By Sen. Jerry Ortiz Y Pino
D-12-Bernalillo

SANTA FE ― New Mexico businesses may be on the verge of seeing one form of commercial piracy go away, a plague that can seriously damage any business’ ability to survive.

Congress is debating “The Innovation Act” which is currently awaiting a vote in the House of Representatives. It is New Mexico’s best hope for protection against “patent trolling,” the filing of patent infringement lawsuits which drain innovation—and form a sort of “tax” on creative businesses.

This parasitic practice has in

Letter To The Editor: ‘Constitutional Carry Petition’

Constitutional Carry Petition To Be Submitted To The Legislature
Researched And Presented by John DePaoli
Los Alamos

The concept of “Constitutional Carry” of firearms (or other weapons) for one’s personal protection is as old as this Constitutional Republic itself and it is an American’s “natural right”.

Defined, it is the ability to legally carry the firearm of your choice either openly or concealed, without permission/permit/license from the government, anywhere in the state of New Mexico that it’s not prohibited to do so by visible posted notice.

Letter To The Editor: We Live In America – And That’s Worth Celebrating

By Steve Boerigter/Kristy Ortega
Kiwanis 4th of July Celebration Chairs

The 2015 4th of July Celebration at Overlook Park was fantastic. The ominous dark clouds and downpour in Los Alamos skirted White Rock all day, as if to ensure we could enjoy the celebration. Mid-afternoon concern transformed into late evening delight as we heard the patriotic classics, danced with Eddy and the Nomads and Outlaw 107.5, and then heard the boom and saw the sky light up … a truly great fireworks display. America at it’s best!

The Celebration has a great deal of the community behind it long before Read More

Letter To The Editor: Reply To Op-Ed By New Mexico Center For Family Policy

By TERRY GOLDMAN
Los Alamos

There is no doubt that America is a Christian nation, because the majority of its citizens are Christians. However, neither Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas nor the New Mexico Center for Family Policy seem to be able to recognize that the government of America is a secular, not a religious, one (Op-Ed here).

The First Amendment states clearly that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof …” Therefore, our government has nothing to say about religious marriage. However, there Read More

Letter To The Editor: Two Historic Buildings On Tour

By W. STANLEY HALL
Los Alamos

On March 25, 1943, I arrived at 109 East Palace in Santa Fe to start work at Los Alamos. The House was not finished yet in Los Alamos, so I spent a week at Rancho del Monte in Tesuque and then another week or so on the screened-in porch of the Big House.

Finally, the first dormitory was built and I moved in. The floor plan was rather simple. Two floors had a series of two bedroom units sharing a shower, sink and toilet. At the south end of the dorm was a day room with a fireplace and a small kitchen.

Each bedroom had a small built-in desk and book shelf. When

Letter To The Editor: Are We A Christian Nation?

By VERNON N. KERR
Los Alamos

Are We A Christian Nation? It depends upon the definition. Would we be a Christian Nation defined by a legislative fiat? No! That is expressly forbidden by our constitution in the first amendment to it. Lawmakers shall make no law with respect to religion.

There are 13 countries that do have an official state religion where the church is an integral part of their government. We have no national religion. In fact, one of the reasons the pioneering people who came to America was to escape such a mandated system of beliefs, faith and practices.  Freedom of religion Read More

Letter To The Editor: In Our Country We Need To Demand To Know What Our Government Is Up To

By RHETA MOAZZAMI
Los Alamos

To address Paul J. Gessing’s letter of June 22 on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and the Trade Promotion Authority, (TPA) that allows presidents to negotiate an agreement with an up-or-down vote in Congress, (they can make no amendments or filibuster):

This might be just fine for a country run by a totalitarian government. But, we the people, in our country, need to demand to know what our government is up to. And, this is impossible with the TPP.

Why should people in a democracy need to just trust their corporations
