Letter to the Editor: About Coach Bob Geyer

By RANDY CARDON
Jemez

Sorry for joining the conversation so late. I live in the Jemez now and I don’t have any kids in the Los Alamos school system, so I don’t hear about some things, till later.

I’ve know Bob Geyer for 20 years or so and have coached with him several times. If I had a child participating in sport in Los Alamos, I would be thrilled if Bob was her/his coach.

I coached youth sports in Los Alamos for 17 years, mostly football but also baseball and soccer. I also work for 10 years with BSA Explorers (14-18 year old Boy Scouts). My Wife and I raised six kids of our own in Los Alamos. Read More

Letter to the Editor: Is Council For Or Against Food Tax?

By WENDY MARCUS
Los Alamos

I am writing to bring to the attention of the people of Los Alamos the possible consequences of the County Council’s recent approval of the New Mexico Municipal League’s Legislative Agenda.

According to a story in the Los Alamos Daily Post from Think New Mexico: “Just in time for the holidays, the New Mexico Municipal League (which represents New Mexico’s mayors and city councilors) is bringing its latest proposal to reimpose a regressive food tax Think New Mexico championed the repeal of this anti-family tax back in Read More

Letter to the Editor: How Do You Thank A Community?

By ANNIE BARD, Coordinator
White Rock Senior Center

How do you thank a community for so graciously doing their very best?

Los Alamos/White Rock is a community that quietly hums with an energy unmatched in my experience. When I first came here I looked around me and longed for more activity, more shopping, more entertainment, more restaurants, and all the window dressing I left behind when I left the Midwest.

As I settled in to my 60’s I found that what we lack in commercial amenities we more than make up for in security, peace of mind, natural beauty, friendly interaction, and genuine Read More

Yang: Those Little Tales That Spark … Thank You

By ELENA YANG
Los Alamos

News usually depresses me. Dealing with business transactions sometimes elevates my blood pressure. I have to practice Zen breathing whenever I have to wait for … practically just about everything these days.

When I feel down, a few of the sites I visit or listen to for a boost of energy, sanity, and a few good laughs, are: www.brainpickings.org, TED Talks, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me! (a hilarious NPR news quiz show), www.stumbleupon.com, or music radio stations. Recently, Washington Post added a weekly “Optimist” news collection, and I find at least one worthy story Read More

Letter to the Editor: Tagging Los Alamos

By LINDA GOFORTH
Los Alamos

Thank you Michelle Worley! How often we have had to say that we do not need to pay experts in the form of costly companies to make decisions the citizens have to live with.

This is a no-brainer example of how it happens, and yours is a very intelligent comment about the particular issue at hand.

The County Council is elected to help with the decision making, and judge how the County administer can be a partner in this with the people of the County.

WORKING TOGETHER is my contribution.

Letter to the Editor: Involve Entire Community And Use Systems Approach To Brand Los Alamos

By MICHELLE WORLEY
Los Alamos

I’ve been following the Los Alamos Daily Post Facebook discussions about a slogan/logo/brand for Los Alamos, and I’ve been impressed by the great ideas and opinions. It seems that Los Alamos is undergoing an identity crisis. Who are we? What are we all about?

I would like to point out that most of the ideas for a slogan tie the community to LANL. As many pointed out in previous Daily Post conversations, Los Alamos is more than LANL. It is art, health and outdoors, small business, volunteers, senior citizens, parents, youth activists, and so much more. Let Read More

Letter to the Editor: Thank You Smith’s For LAHS Treats

By Members of the Holiday Cheer Committee

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Smith’s store in White Rock for donating cookies, hot chocolate, hot cider and candy canes to share with the students of Los Alamos High School as part of our Holiday Fun Week.

These treats were a great stress reliever for students during finals week, and were greatly appreciated. Close to 600 students enjoyed a hot drink and cookie during the day Wednesday, and candy canes Thursday.

Thanks again to Smith’s in White Rock for being so supportive of Los Alamos High

Izraelevitz: Burning Memories Of Hanukah

By DAVID IZRAELEVITZ
Los Alamos

When my boys were little, they loved Hanukah for two distinct reasons. Like any red-blooded capitalist, they loved the accumulation of wealth during each of the eight nights; the toys, the software, the books, the new underwear; well, maybe not the new underwear, but they knew to be polite about it. They also knew the routine for each night. We would say some brief Hebrew prayers, turn out the house lights, light the Hanukah candles, sing a song or two, and open presents. Colored paper was shredded, gifts discovered, new clothes politely acknowledged and immediately Read More

Letter to the Editor: Please Return Red Jackson’s Sign

By MELISSA BLAIR
Los Alamos

An act very upsetting to the North Mesa Stable area has occurred.

Red Jackson’s barn has been an icon at the stables since the late 50’s. Sometime in the last week the sign he hung at the barn was stolen. His barn has been called Red’s Bunkhouse since he owned the barn and was quite a character at the los Alamos stables. The dressage area is named after him.

I currently own the barn and have for the past three years. I filed a police report Thursday and am very upset such an iconic piece of the stable’s history is gone.

I am asking for help from the Read More

Letter to the Editor: Response To Story About Bob Geyer

By J. MONTOYA
Los Alamos

Editor’s note – The author of this letter is a woman and is not to be confused with Assistant Wrestling Coach Jude Montoya.

After reading the story about the complaints that had been filed against Los Alamos High School Head Wrestling Coach Bob Geyer and then reading the letter to the editor regarding those complaints; it is obvious that those who read the story were mislead into thinking that the complaints about Coach Geyer were only about him yelling at the wrestlers … that couldn’t be further from the truth.

I want to clarify
