Letter to the Editor: Los Alamos Has Lots Of Potential; Let’s Tap Into It In 2015

By JOYCE ANDERSON
Los Alamos

It’s been clear from the number of letters written over the last few weeks that  Los Alamos County’s attempt to re-brand itself with the slogan “Live Exponentially” was not popular with people here in town.

I understand the need for branding, and why the County Council was pursuing this project. However, I think they were misguided in their attempts with the slogan “Living Exponentially.” Simply, that is not who we are as a town, and the people here did not want to be misrepresented. I include myself in that number.

That being said, we do need to think outside of the

Letter to the Editor: Where Is Our Corporate Memory?

By HEDY DUNN
WHITE ROCK

Now that “Live Exponentially” has died, perhaps it might be a good time to remind the Council and community that at one time we (perhaps it was the Chamber of Commerce) had a perfectly apt “tag-line” that described Los Alamos as “A Unique Blend of Science and Scenery.”

Why do we have to keep searching and paying for yet another slogan? Where is our corporate memory?

Letter to the Editor: Los Alamos Should Be Visited By The World – Not Shrouded In Secrecy

By MIKE WHEELER
Los Alamos

It’s always surprising to me the many experts who come out against initiatives of the council never having bothered to even make a cursory review of the issue.

The branding effort by the council is another way that the rest of the world can be encouraged to visit our community. The proposed brand was not developed to appease the local population but to give the world a more inviting phrase that will encourage visitors rather than turning them away as does the “atomic city” brand. I personally like the atomic city; however, I am not running a business dependent Read More

Letter to the Editor: Forty-One Aspen Students Write expressions Of Thanks To Los Alamos!

By SAVANNAH
Aspen Sixth Grade

Dear Los Alamos,

This new building that Los Alamos has built is beautiful!

One thing that surprised me about the new building was the architecture. The architecture around the whole school is just amazing and beautiful. Another thing that surprised me was the media center. The media center has a fireplace and couches so you can read quietly.

One thing that was eye-catching in the building was the Aspen trees all over the school. The trees in the windows of the media center are incredible! Another thing that was eye-catching was the dining hall. It is very neat and beautiful. Read More

Letter to the Editor: Support Open Space Plan

By REID PRIEDHORSKY
Los Alamos

I’m one of those kids who came back. I had many choices, but my family and I chose Los Alamos. Why? What makes Los Alamos special?

My friends who live elsewhere are not impressed by my lab job. Nor are they impressed by the slower small-town pace of life, the great schools, the friendly people, or the opportunity to really make a difference in public service. These types of things are big pluses, but they are available in lots of places.

However, they are impressed by the fact that I can walk out my back gate into a forested canyon system on public land. If that’s iced

Letter to the Editor: ‘Where Discoveries Are Made’ Is Perfect For This Town

By JUNE WALL
Los Alamos

Really? Living exponentially? How presumptuous and unappealing! Los Alamos is a small, richly endowed town with something new and different around every corner and under every rock. Let’s invite others to see how much they can discover about us, our science, our environment, and our resources.

Synonymous with exponential are algebraic, algorithmic, arithmetic, binary, differential, digital, exponent, fractional, integral, logarithm, logarithmic, mathematical, numeral, numeracy and statistical. Surely describes a place the average family would

Letter to the Editor: Too Much Pessimism?

By JERRY ANTOS
Los Alamos

Dear Los Alamos,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news … but  “Live Exponentially”, new schools, Central Avenue revitalization, Larry Walkup green whale, and MANY other projects that our County Council has spent an absolute fortune on proves one thing and one thing alone. The Los Alamos County Council doesn’t give a rats butt about what the people want … they want to do what they want and damn the people they were elected to govern. Sounds like Washington, D.C. doesn’t it?

What if they had an election and NOBODY Voted for anyone from the choices of Council candidates? Read More

Letter to the Editor: Not ‘Living Exponentially’

By GEORGE KYRALA
Los Alamos

To County Council:

I am totally frustrated by the “exponential” spending by the council, and its waste of resources to brand Los Alamos, especially by the use of “Living Exponentially”.

I do not want to live exponentially, nor do I want to be associated with exponential use of resources. I prefer living within my means without conspicuous consumption of finite resources.

This is a beautiful scientific town. We should strive to stress the discoveries and the joys of living in a historic town. The “Live exponentially” slogan Read More
