Letter to the Editor: What ‘Live Exponentially’ Really Means

By PATRICIA MAX
Camp Verde, Ariz.

A quick translation into Los Alamos County-speak makes it clear what “Live Exponentially” really means. Substitute “Spend” for “Live” and allow no exponents smaller than 1 make it clear what the new brand represents. I lost count after the County exceeded $100 million in the last eight or so years.

I’m sure that with the assistance of an increase in taxes, the $100 million will double in less than eight years, resulting in all residents “spending exponentially”. Read More

Letter to the Editor: Super Exponential…Decay!

By KEI DAVIS
Los Alamos

Why just exponential? Super exponential would be even better. That’s a proper term, and I know what it means. I must be so smart. As Mike Lippiat suggested https://ladailypost.comcontent/letter-editor-exponentially-ineffective (the best on the subject so far, IMO), trying to sound “smart” isn’t attractive, but using the word in this meaningless way sounds moronic, rather like Hollywood sci-fi nonsense.

The grammar is wrong. “Live exponentially,” oops, “Live exponentially!!!” is not descriptive,

Letter to the Editor: Los Alamos: Live Exponentially, Or Where Discoveries Are Made

By E. ALAN WADLINGER
Los Alamos

As a 40+ year resident of Los Alamos, I can understand our slogan “Where Discoveries Are Made.” This slogan represents us, and I can see this slogan being used to attract tourists and visitors. However, this same slogan could apply to most national and state parks, or to Canyon Road in the City Different, and to many other places.

Thinking as an outsider to Los Alamos, which is hard to do after living here for 40 years, our slogan says “Visit Me.” The intended stated purpose of the branding slogan “Live Exponentially” is to entice people and businesses to move and to “Live” Read More

Letter to the Editor: What’s Going On At Aquatic Center?

By DOUG STAVERT
Los Alamos

I have a few questions for anyone from the County who may know about the schedule of renovations going on at Larry Walkup pool.

  • Why has the pool opening been delayed? I know something went wrong because when I ask friends who work for LA County, they look uncomfortable say they really can’t talk about it.  So why the delay and why the secrecy?
  • Is this delay costing us more money?
  • The most important question is when will the pool reopen?  All I am looking for is approximate week/month/year.  I am asking because some of us are using other pools in Santa Fe

Letter to the Editor: Response To ‘Live Exponentially, Not!’

By VICKI BARNETT
Los Alamos

Julie, I’m confused. Is Los Alamos a “friendly, comfortable, beautiful place” or are we “stuck in the racist, classist 1950’s”?  (See letter.)

I think you need to decide if you are ranting against the new slogan or just telling all of us Los Alamos folks how awful we are before you send a letter to the editor. I know I quit reading halfway through your tirade even though I feel as strongly as you do against the Live Exponentially slogan.

I’m just tired of being told I am a racist, elitist, classless person just because Read More

Sierra Club: Be A Hero

Be A Hero
By JODY BENSON and MICHAEL DI ROSA
Sierra Club

What if you were offered a quick, easy, inexpensive way to clean up litter, lower chemical pollution, and reduce endocrine disruption affecting sexual development and obesity?

What if I told you that this action contributes to a healthier, cleaner future for you and your kids? And that it’s quick, cheap and easy? What is this tiny action? Just bring your own shopping bags wherever you go
and forego those flimsy disposable plastic shopping bags. I can hear huffs and see eyes rolling as some of you quickly reject what you thought would be a heroic,

Letter to the Editor: Exponentially Ineffective

By MIKE LIPPIATT
Los Alamos

To begin with let’s examine the first couple of definitions you see when you google the term “Exponentially”.

  1. The root of exponentially is the French verb exponere, meaning “to put out”. Think of a factory that puts out so many products its creations seem to increase exponentially. The mathematical origin of this word has to do with multiplying a number by itself so….think of rabbits, who are known for multiplying exponentially. Now imagine if rabbits worked in a factory…(No animals were harmed during this explanation)…..www.vocabulary.com
  2. *Of or relating

Letter to the Editor: Live Exponentially, Not!

By JULIE SMITH
Los Alamos

A few months ago I wrote a letter about my disappointment in the proposal to re-brand Los Alamos with the high-falutin’ “Live Exponentially”; well, since the issue is still being pushed down our throats I’m writing again because I feel so strongly against it.

This idea, this plan to spend $250,000 of my  community’s funds in order to promote Los Alamos as an arrogant, elitist community is unacceptable.

First of all, it was only a few years ago that a significant amount of OUR money was spent in branding Los Alamos “Where Discoveries Are Made”, on surveys, literature, Read More

Thank you all for your support. In this season of thanks, I want to acknowledge and thank our communities throughout New Mexico for the support provided so generously to our Girl Scouts.
